Put simply, this Scandi nation features the kind of natural beauty that words will never do justice. The Norwegian fjords are the crowning glory of the country’s endless scenery. There are over a thousand scattered across the jagged coastline, but the most iconic –Nærøyfjord, Sognefjord, Lysefjord and Geirangerfjord – are located on the west coast. These secluded saltwater inlets are ideal for scenic boat or kayaking trips, allowing you to soak up the waterfalls and glaciers along the way. Capital city Oslo makes a for a great base, providing a middle ground between urban culture and rural wonders. Surrounding the abundance of museums, nightlife and restaurants are dozens of green spaces, with the Nordmarka forest no more than 30 minutes from the city centre. The area around Holmenkollen is a great spot for cross-country skiing or summer-time hikes. For your best chance of spotting the illusive Northern Lights, plan your trip between October and March. Anyone taking the time to explore Norway will spot a variety of wildlife, including humpback, orca and sperm whales. In the high arctic around Svalbard, there’s also the chance of encountering the likes of polar bears and walruses.
