Went to Shimoda mid Sept which was lean season for summer adventure so less people around. It offers good beaches and many water activities. Stayed for a week which gives us relaxing time to enjoy the beach and places to see.

Great town right on the coast, has a number of great beaches nearby and beautiful rocky coastlines and cliffs to see. It is more of a tourist town though, so expect prices of things to be high. Be ready to hear constantly about Commodore Perry and the Black Ships! Some things require you to sign up or buy tickets well in advance; it's worth looking up anything you're interested in trying beforehand to see if it does. Best coffee we had was at the Hana Cafe, best food was the South Cafe.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama. It's right across the street from a lovely beach and the breakfast was quite nice. We loved the 2 outdoor onsens that are built on the 1F. Great to watch the stars from there amidst the treetops!

Staff even came out and “chatted” with the kids and I while my husband checked it. Pool and Onsen was amazing. Wish we would have tried the massage parlor or the restaurant at the hotel but simply didn’t have time. I dont know if it’s customary in all Japanese hotels but I LOVED that they set up and took down your Japanese style beds every day.MargaretUnited States
