Gifu is a city that's nestled in the valleys of surrounding mountains. It gets very cold and windy in the winter and excrutiatingly hot in the summer. There are many hiking trails accessible from this city.
Make sure to plan your trip to hit the right temperatures. You can use this place as a base to drive out to nearby locations such as Monet's pond, Seki city or Nagoya city. It is also about 2 hours drive from Lake Biwa if you use the toll roads.
Public transport might not be that convenient, recommended to rent a car for this place.

Gifu now is a rather quiet city as most of the Japanese have moved out to bigger cities like Nagoya and Tokyo. The shopping walk at Yanagase had only a few shops open for business. The plus factor is that there is a Takashimaya shopping building where you can do some proper shopping there, but the things are on the pricey side.
However on the JR station side , there are alot of eateries and supermarkets where you can eat and buy foodstuff . Prices are much cheaper there for sashimi if you are into it.
Gifu is only good for the river commorant fishing town , so you have to travel outskirts to Nagano river to enjoy nature and river walk. The castle is only an external shell of a modernised interior , not much to see like the other castles in japan.

I went to Gujo Hachiman and the place is one of the most beautiful I've seen in Japan. I joined Gujo Odori, which is all night dancing held from August 13-15 this year, and it was a magical experience. The dancing started at around 7pm and didn't stop until 5am.
This is our first time trying the Love hotel. When we arrived, there was no one to help us check in, fortunately, we were assisted by the staff. I would say this is the best value for money hotel, The room has everything, from karaoke, a massage chair, a sauna, to a jacuzzi bathtub. The only thing we don't quite understand is that once you are in your room, you can't open the door from inside the room, you need to call the front desk to unlock the door. Breakfast was delivered to our room without disturbing us and it was good.
Though the guesthouse was not that close to the train stations, Hiro-san very kindly offered to pick me up. This was very helpful as I had limited time to explore the city. In addition, I was able to rent a bike from the guesthouse at a bargain to get around town and to key tourist attractions. Clear instructions were dotted around the property to get the best out of the stay. Hiro-san also dropped me off at the station very early the next morning. Very grateful to have started my holiday in Gifu with such excellent hosts.
The owner at B&B Legare is so caring and helpful. She served me delicious breakfast and with variety each different day. She did everything for me so that I could have a comfortable and memorable stay. I was there for a conference and had very little time to go for sightseeing. But the owner helped me to go for sightseeing and showed me many beautiful sights of Gifu.
Kind suggestion for guest: if you plan to go to gifu, you should definitely stay at B& B Legare. With the owner, you will get to know gifu better.
The hosts were very nice! They gave me a lot of tourist info and maps of the area so I could find plenty of interesting things in Gifu. They were also very generous - I booked a dorm but since there weren't other guests at the time, I was allowed to use the private room instead. It was very cute and comfortable. The shared space is clean, attractive and had everything I needed. Convenient location close to the castle and park as well. I enjoyed my time there.
Very friendly staff. Great value for money and for the price the room was very good and clean. Our room had a great view of the castle perched on the mountain a few miles away. A bag of new towels, toiletries and tea and coffee was on our door the second day. Good location close to many restaurants. The station is very close by too - maybe 5 mins walk. Parking is in the car park next to the hotel which seemed very safe and easy to use to walk to the hotel.
Convenient location near izakaya / restaurant street with plenty of ambience and food choice. Easy to get to from the train station by foot. The lady in reception didn't speak english but did everything she could using the google translate on the phone. The room size was slightly more spacious than other similar hotels we stayed in.
The host runs this B&b to create connections(繋がり) with people from around the world rather than merely providing a service. She picked me up at the Gifu station even it was late at night and kindly taught me about the city, showed me the way to enjoy her place as if at home. Fantastic experience. This will be a precious memory.
I had an exceptional stay at this hotel and would recommend it to everyone. The place was spotless, the breakfast was fantastic, and the staff were very approachable and friendly. The location was also great, just a 15-minute ride by public transport from the race spot I participated in. 10/10.
We stayed in a suite room, 607, which had a separate sitting area and 2 toilets. This is a large, high-end hotel with quality facilities. We chose this hotel because it is only about a 20 minute walk to the dock where the boats to view ukai (cormorant fishing).
Such a beautiful part of the world. The view from the rooms was superb. The staff were very kind. The breakfast service was delicious. Having an onsen in the hotel was a huge bonus, and it was well maintained.
For the price I was surprised to see the room pretty big with a nice fourniture , the bathroom it’s nice also with jacuzzi . Really good for the price after up to you to try an love hotel.
The location is perfect! A 2-minute walk to the bars and restaurants of Tamamiya-cho, a 5-minute walk to either JR Gifu Station or Meitetsu Gifu Station, and not too far from Takashimaya.
It is a comfortable basic hotel with a fantastic location as it is right across from JR and Meitetsu stations and right next to the main nightlife (restaurants / bars) of Gifu City.
Location is convenient. Best Ramen in front of the hotel ( Shin Kuro Fune ) . Breakfast was good. Family Mart in the hotel. A lot of good restaurants & entertainment nearby.
Very confortable hotel with large rooms and a good equipment level. Great location with easy access to Gifu shopping streets, very well prices for the quality.
very close to the station , very easy to get to all gifu attractions , and good for dinner choices , back streets are full of places to eat , very fun .
