The food prepared by the host was phenomenal always. All food was procured locally and their goat cheese is absolutely delightful. After dinner, Gio recommended we take a stroll to see the stars and recommended some easy hiking paths to take in the morning after we left. The house was warm throughout despite being an old fashioned house in the mountains with no drafts. The futons unbelievably comfortable. I got to play with goats in the morning so that's always a good day in my book.

Great experience, they lent us shovels and yukata to dig our own onsen in the river in front. The food was incredible, with much variety, even though we asked for vegetarian options (breakfast + takeaway bento)

This was such a great stay! Simon and Yumiko, the owners of this small Guesthouse are such lovely and inviting people. Simon met us at Kii-Tanabe station at our pre-discussed time, and drove the 25 min to the remote guesthouse. The atmosphere around the property is serene and so quiet, such a good change in pace compared to Osaka! Simon helped us with our Kumano Kodo walking plan, and then the next morning dropped us off at the start of the hike, another 30 min drive away. There’s a small shrine that you can walk to close to the property. There are two guest rooms on property, we were the only ones there, so it wasn’t loud. We had a microwave, fridge, electric kettle and heater/air conditioner unit in our room. They also provide coffee and green tea and cups! Highly recommend!

Our favourite stay in Japan. Beautiful view and decoration. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The food was delicious and healthy. The onsen is very nice and spacious.

The host Hiroki and his beautiful wife Naoko are generous, kind and very warmth. They did everything to make our experience incredible. They were most keen to share their homeland, with is. The dinner, breakfast and bento lunch was exceedingly amazing. Can't ask for more. Will return of course very soon!

So I really didn't understand what I booked. 'Retreat' to me meant a communal space of travelers. I was also unsure if food would be provided. This was a point of anxiety for me because if there was no food at the end of a long hike and at the beginning of the next day's hike, we'd be miserable. I cannot convey to you the SHOCK and JOY to discover that we had booked an ENTIRE beautiful, modern home and that it was FULLY STOCKED with the best foods and drinks! There were two platters of vegetables, meat and seafood to grill. There was beer, sake and lots of snacks! There were so many more amenities that we didn't have time to use because of our hiking schedule: Fireplaces, Grill, wood-fired bath, etc. We felt well compensated for our money and appreciate both the quantity and quality of food. After our hike we were able to shower, do a load of laundry, grill up some food, and drink tea and snack, lounge in our yukata and listen to jazz. Thank you so much Sen.Retreat Takahara!

Wonderful location at the start of the Kumano Kodo trail. We spent about 2 hours walking from the information center to this guest house, and then about 5 hours to our next accommodation in Chikatsuyu the following day, making it a great stop. Super friendly hosts, clean and tidy accommodation, French-style cuisine was a nice novelty and very tasty.

We were very happy that Shino had already booked a car for us (no additional cost) for the next day, to get back to Takahara, where we would continue to walk the Kumano Kodo. The walk to the house from Takahara was fine, but very much down hill, so it would have been a tough start of the day walking up the mountain. Thank you for that! The food was really good, and we enjoyed both the dinner, breakfast and the bento box.
