Our chalet was a modern two bedroom apartment. The furnishings were great. The kitchen was well stocked with crockery, cutlery etc. There was an oven and dishwasher. The bed was cosy and comfortable. In the bathroom there was a washing machine and dryer. Outside was a carport and storage area.
The Chalet was walking distance to town.

The location is great with really good views of Mt Ruapehu when the weather is clear. There are also walking and cycling trails nearby which are worth exploring

We stayed in Ohakune to ride the Old Coach Trail - a walking and cycling trail that runs between Ohakune & Horopito. It's a grade 3 trail and we rode it both ways but most people get a shuttle to Horopito and ride it one way. Lovely trail with thick bush, viaducts and views to Mount Ruapehu.
There are a reasonable number of restaurants/cafes in Ohakune, considering it's a small town. We had dinner at Osteria, which was OK. Utopia had nice coffee and pastries.

We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet.
Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.
Location was great right in the heart of ohakune for dinner places and shopping needs. The staff were very friendly and prompt with our needs using the spas which is amazing after a day of snowboarding, my mate and i shared a bunk room perfect on a budget small rooms but if ya go to ohakune you won't be staying in a room all day with all the activities to do there and concerts we caught kora and tiki tane gig went off at the powder keg that the staff organized our transportation so 5 star service from us
We arrived at Ohakune Railway Station and looked at our transport options which were very limited. We called the accommodation to ask for advice and the owner - Denis - said he would be right over to pick us up - how kind. The room was just lovely and had a kitchenette so we could cater for ourselves. The motel had a hot tub which we used on both nights of our stay - just great. Ohakune was a great little town and we enjoyed our stop off here very much.
This was excellent for the cost. It is a 'backpacker' type accomodation but was clean, cosy, everythinng worked well, staff were very helpful. If you are on a budget you will be very pleased, if you just like to save you will be very happy here. If you want luxury look elsewhere. But clean comfortable quiet handy, this is great. We are mid 60's and could easily pay more but like to save and we liked it and would stay here again.
Great value for money. Everything you need for a self-contained stay, clean, and warm too. Very ‘old-style NZ bach’ feel, with older furnishings and cheap crockery, but proper kitchen & fridge was a real bonus when you don’t want to spend money eating out. Quiet location. Handy little "drying cupboard" where the hot water cylinder is located.
Very peaceful setting just outside of Ohakune’s Main Street. Lovely garden with the two rivers (awa rua) burbling in the background. Just the right size for a weekend stay, and the spa was a huge bonus after participating in the Ruapehu Trails festival. Chris was friendly and chatty, and made sure we were well settled in.
Great location overlooking the mountain. The pub attached to the hotel does fantastic food and has a good selection of beers on tap. The room is simple, but had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. The staff were really friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome.
We loved the home overall (open layout, wonderful aesthetics with the outdoor shower, beautifully decorated area around the incredible outdoor hot tub/spa (which was very easy to operate), the kitchen well stocked, very nice bathrooms, and an easy to use washer and dryer.
We had a fantastic holiday!!
We loved the Spa Bath on Saturday night.
The Top 10 Ohakune is so close to everything and the Staff were all so helpful and cared about our stay.
The Cabins are extra comfy and surprisingly Soundproof.
Thanks for being Amazing!!!
Great location right in the centre of Ohakune, with free parking around the back. We've stayed previously and the rooms and bathrooms were as remembered - basic but clean. Easy check in and out, and accommodating of our late check in. Friendly staff.
The Gables B&B is both very spacious, well equipped with a small kitchen, and super cozy! If you are hiking in the park nearby, this is a great place to stay. The star gazing at night is also fantastic since there is so little light pollution!!
We didn't order breakfast, the room was warm and cosy, the shower had great pressure and was hot, the room was clean, the beds were very comfy. The spa was out of order 😔 we have decided to always stay in a hotel now while we are away 😁
We enjoyed our stay at the Ohakune Court Motel. We liked the views of the mountain from our unit. The room had everything you need for a nice short break away. I love the electric blankets and extra blankets provided.
The room was a lovely size with a spacious sitting area. It was fantastic having a beautiful big deep bath to relax in. Comfortable bed.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful
