It was very unique experience. This very charming traditional Japanese ryokan is within short distance from the train (or bus) station. Everything was clean and well organised there. We spent really very relaxing enjoyable moments there. It feels all very authentic (including delicious Japanese dining) and the stuff is also very friendly and welcoming. 100% worth it!

Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya was an astounding experience for me. The Ryokan is located in a pictureske street with many small shops and restaurants. The rooms are great, featuring a super nice kotatsu, a futon, a bed and a separate room for enjoying the view and making/drinking tea. The room also has a refrigerator which is great. Also, Akira-san can heat your Conbini food in a microwave if you ask him. The two onsen facilities the ryokan features are both great, being private and having the option to adjust water temperature by adding cool water. Lastly, there is a free drinking water station in the lobby. If you are planning on visiting the Jigokudani Yaen Koen Snow Monkey Park, this ryokan is a great option since Akira (or his mother) will gladly take you right to the entrance of the park, with no additional fee within ten minutes. Which brings me to my favourite part of this ryokan: Akira, his mother and all of the lovely staff. Akira-san speaks really good English so check-in and basic questions about onsen, food, attractions and anything else are no problem at all. For more complicated stuff he will just use a translator app. If every person in the world would be a just a little bit more like Akira-san, we would live in a better world. He constantly made me feel at home and taken care of, which I really appreciated since I kinda had a hard time mental-wise while being there. Akira-san even drove me to the station at the day I had to leave and made sure I have everything I needed. Great humans, great ryokan, great rooms, great onsen, great location, great stay. Would come again for sure if I ever were to visit Yamanouchi again. - ヤニク

The host is just super nice and helpful, she pick us at the train station and she explain us what we've to see in the town, like a little guide. She bring us to Monkey park when we arrived and she kept our luggage to put it in our room so no worries for us even if we came before the check in time. We can choose to eat at the ryokan or not (is not included), and it was amazing : homemade delicious dishes in a typical atmosphere. The osen can be private when we wanted and all bath stuff is included. So no regret and we recommend it ! ✌️

Kokuya Ryokan was the perfect base for visiting the snow monkeys, but honestly, I could have easily stayed here for two weeks. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of—the service was impeccable, and nothing was too much to ask. The food was delicious, and for those who prefer it, a Western pillow is available upon request. But the true highlight? The baths! With an incredible number of onsen options, we made it our mission to try them all in three days—and we did! Plus, experiencing the traditional bath tour in Shibu Onsen was a fantastic addition to our stay.

We loved everything about our stay. The staff very warmly welcomed us. Our room was big and the futons very comfy. The food served at dinner and breakfast was tasty and delicious. The onsen was wonderful with a beautiful outside area. The location next to historic onsen is also great. They also provided us a free shuttle ride to the Snow Monkey Park (you take the bus on the way back but beware of the schedule because we waited 2 hours to head back to Nagano). Our only regret was that we couldn’t spend one more night at the ryokan. One night was too short.

The couple who runs the place were so nice and friendly. On top of shuttling us to the monkey park, they loaned us rubber boots to wear for the hike up because it was pretty muddy at the time. Our room on the fourth floor had its own bath and a balcony with a view, and the futons we slept on were super comfortable. There’s an onsen in the building and a public one outside not too far away, and we made full use of both! I especially liked the variety of yukata patterns we could choose. Upon checkout, we were given a cute five yen coin ribbon charm to take home ☺️

I highly recommend this ryokan. Dinner and breakfast was amazing. Onsen experience with family was great. We arrived by car and Akira managed to provide a parking spot for us. The rooms were spacious and futons were comfortable for us. Heating system works great during our mid winter stay. Toiletries and yukatas were provided. While we were about to leave, he is assisting some guests to be dropped off at Snow Monkey Park which I think is great if you have no car.

Great location, in house restaurant for breakfast and dinner, traditional Japanese Ryokan. Despite being a tatami mat with futons, the bedding was extremely comfortable. Free bus pick up from train station as well as free bus drop off to Snow Monkey park. Staff were very helpful and provided lots of information about what to do and how to do it. Shared bathroom facilities were quite basic but OK. The bonus is the key to the public onsens, all 9 of them.

The staff were superbly friendly while retaining the unique traditional ryokan atmosphere. The onsens were beautiful and entirely peaceful. Both the guest rooms and the dining rooms were beautiful tatami rooms that when paired with the yukatas really made you feel the atmosphere at its most. The shuttle bus service to the snow monkey park and train station was also incredibly helpful!

Loved the traditional Ryokan. Cosy rooms with comfy futon style beds. We had a room at the front with an indoor balcony that overlooked the street. Had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant, which was great. Staff were really friendly, helpful and spoke English. They supplied Yukata and geta to wear out to the onsen - the closest was only 50 meters up the road.

Beautiful old ryokan with super friendly and helpful team; quality service (the pickup from the train station, the drive to the monkey park); delicious food and superb cappuccino. Really enjoyed the traditional rooms (sleeping on futons) and the relaxed atmosphere in the ryokan. And not to forget: access to the 9 onsen baths as a guest of the ryokan. Try them all, walking towards them in traditional Japanese yukata and gets. Enjoyed every second of being here!
