Shiroganeya is a traditional Japanese minshuku. Our host Maki-san was truly exceptional. She made sure our family of 6 were well-fed, well-rested, and well-prepared for our little hike to the main Togakushi shrine, which is a 7-min drive away. The dinner prepared for us was superb as well - at least 7-courses! I liked that the house itself has a lot of history. Dinner is served with precious chinaware that are more than a century-old, but still in very good shape and colour. There is adequate heating throughout the house, especially important for a cold winter stay. Maki-san also had a stash of toy cars and trains that kept our boy occupied. There’s just so much to rave about this place. Hopefully we’ll be back for a second visit!

Despite the language barrier, we were warmly welcomed and could really benefit from the Shukubo's experience. We had an amazing volunteer guide showing us around Zenko-ji during before/during the morning ritual. We also could ask and benefit (pay) from a zazen course. The food (vegetarian) was really good even though we were not sure what exactly we ate and how it should be eaten. We were a bit scared to book at first because there was only one review but we are really happy we still did it. The bath/onsen is on a 30 min window and there is a curfew (gates closing at 9 pm). We had a heater in the room so no problem of temperature. There was also an English guide explaining Buddhism in Japan.

There are a total of seven of us traveling by car in the Nagano and Nagaoka areas, and this is the only hotel that can accommodate 7 people. The host is very friendly and tried to communicate with us in slow Japanese and simple English. The room is big and clean, the air-conditioning facilities and bedding are also very comfortable. But be aware that there is only shared washrooms, and because of the covid, the onsen closes before 7:30, which means it will be difficult for you to take a shower after 7:30 (2022/08/05).

The food was great. We could not finish dinner because they gave us so much delicious food like boar and monkfish. Breakfast was also very filling and definitely worth the money because there are not many restaurants in the area. The staff was very nice - giving us a full tour when we checked in and were very friendly and approachable. The public onsen was nice as well as our private one. They made our futons for us in our room during dinner. Everything was clean enough. They spoke very limited English, but had translations pre-prepared for most things. I was able to get by with simple Japanese. They also gave you quite a bit of amenities like shampoo, skincare, aftershave, socks, and water bottles. Overall, our stay was very comfortable and I enjoyed it.

Fantastic Japanese half board menu in authentic Ryokan. We were spoilt with the attentive service and extent of traditional Japanese dishes provided by the hotel. Every meal felt like a feast.

Amazing dinner and breakfast. We had a private room for eating. The room was also very comfortable. We had everything we needed there, including hygiene products and clothes (yukata, socks). There was an indoor and exterior onsen, which were very clean and relaxing. The staff was very helpful and we were offered a ride to Togura Station after our stay. It is a bit expensive but worth it, I would like to return.
