How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

We'd been to Val Du Charron a couple of years ago, and our experience was great, the views divine, the restaurant and spa did not disappoint, which is why when friends picked Wellington for their wedding, I booked Val Du Charron immediately. We were sadly disappointed this visit. Our booking was made a year in advance, and we were not informed until the day before that there would be construction at the hotel. This normally would not phase me if provided time to prepare as we have a newborn with us. Upon arrival, we were met by Si, who was lovely and showed us to our rooms (booked 2 as we had my mum traveling with us). Our rooms were sadly filthy. There were cobwebs, spiders, cockroaches, and millipedes enjoying our lodgings with us. The curtains had not been aired or cleaned as they were glued together by insect activity. The beds, however, were clean, and so we decided to deal as we'd mostly just be sleeping there anyway. During bathtime, the shower started to fill up with sewage in our room and my mums. I reported this immediately to Si, who did come by to check it out and also find us an open family room for the night as it was rather late in the evening to do anything about the plumbing. I'm in two minds about this part of the experience because while the room was new, clean, spacious and lovely, there was no bath in the bathroom that had sufficient space for a bath-shower combo. Families need to bathe children, so this is a very poor design. Also, the tiles used for the shower floor were backsplash tiles, which are glossy and, therefore, slippery - also a poor design choice. I'm hoping the new apartments being built are better designed than this as it's a hazard. We were sad the restaurant was closed for the renovation, but were excited to hear we would have breakfast in our rooms. The breakfast for this type of establishment was disappointing, to say the least.

Guest safety and practicality – especially for families – is top of mind as we finalize the new units. Your observations about tile choice and the absence of a bathtub in the family suite have been shared with our design team. We also acknowledge your comments about the breakfast offering. While in-room service was introduced as a temporary measure during renovations, your feedback will help us improve both quality and presentation going forward. One small bottle of sparkling water for two adults staying two nights. No breakfast on second day and no option to order it. No milk. Two smoke alarms in room, one of them emitting a bright flash every minute throughout the night. Challenge owner/manager to sleep in Room 11 with that ridiculous device.

Terrible room!! We booked a Superior King room - definitely not superior?? It looks like a doctor's waiting room - cold and old, sad decor. We could not close the curtains, as they use a curtain rail with plastic hooks - some missing and gaps at the top. My husband had to get on a chair to fix it. Dirty floor and rug. Lots of mosquitos, but no spray in the room. We could not drink the tap water, as they had a problem with their water and charged us for additional water. Not a bench at the end of the bed - where to put the blanket and cushions - on the floor? Bathroom does not have a shelf or any space to put toiletries.

Dodgy road leading to the estate. One restaurant was closed. A lot of mosquitos in the room which can be easily prevented or a light as you find in many SA hotelrooms. No wine glasses in the room which seems strange for a wine estate. Not even a bottle of water in the room. Swimmingpool towels had to be picked up at reception, small thing to put it in the room.
