How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewA very nice place with a local charm. That's obviously not an example of a shiny modern villa but everything was there, local architecture, panoramic windows, beautiful views (Yzerfontain got the best ones on the West Coast), a cleaning lady (which is super convenient for big companies), huge dining area with a kitchen, wifi etc Make sure you visit Rust in Thyme local cafe a short walk away.

Verified reviewThe property is situated in an excellent location on the beach.
The property is in poor condition with old facilities. The bathrooms are in need of renovation and the pool is cracked. Additionally, the pool furniture is dilapidated, and there is a leaking roof. The facilities appear old, dirty, and worn out.

Verified reviewWe recently had the pleasure of staying at The Lighthouse in Yzerfontein, and it was an experience we'll cherish forever. The house's stunning location right on the beach offered breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere that made our stay exceptionally memorable. With beautiful decor and an evident touch of love, it felt more like a home than a holiday rental. The house was perfectly equipped with everything we could possibly need, from a fantastic kitchen filled with all amenities to the thoughtful inclusion of firewood for the braai. Our group of ten was comfortably accommodated, and we particularly appreciated the two separate units, each fully equipped with a mini kitchen and bathroom, allowing for privacy and convenience.Overall, we give The Lighthouse a well-deserved 10 out of 10. Its combination of beautiful design, thoughtful amenities, and a magnificent setting right by the sea made our stay unforgettable. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special getaway and look forward to the opportunity to return."
While our stay was near perfect, we noted a couple of areas for improvement. The absence of a generator for load shedding was one, though it was hardly an inconvenience thanks to the gas stoves and pre-charged lights provided. Additionally, some minor wear and tear were noticeable, such as rust making a few doors difficult to open, but these are small issues that can be easily addressed.
Hello Anton Thank you so much for such a fabulous review, we really appreciate it a lot! We are so glad you could enjoy the house and location so much!! And yes, the rust is an issue, creeping in all over the place, an on going challenge! But we will get to it immediately. And it might please you to know for the future, that we have a big converted installed now, to bridge those 'dark' moments... Go well and all the best, Andrej

Verified reviewLoved the size of the house, loved the location the sauna the proximity to the beach the pool is superb. The house has a beach house feel to the interior which we loved .
For the price we paid cushions is ezpected on the furniture outside by the braai area.. Maybe now Is also the time to get a few new cushions for the loungers by the Pool as it's a little bit dated . Other than that had a great time and it's a beautiful home with views for days ..

Verified reviewLocation, size, layout is perfect for family and friends. Wonderful size pool, right on the beach, watching sunsets from the deck. The beds are extremely comfortable, we all commented on how perfect the beds were .
That some windows can’t seem to lock due to expansion of the exposed wood to the elements. The house had a burning wood smell especially in the upstairs room with the fireplace. The seagulls bathe themselves in the swimming pool leaving a residue, poop and feathers everywhere.

Verified reviewGorgeous location, peaceful, direct beach access, amazing pool and views. Comfy lounge with a big fireplace and ample seating for everyone, well equipped kitchen. Sauna is a nice touch especially in winter
no outdoor under cover/ sheltered braai facility, bit exposed to harsh weather in winter and with load shedding one wants to be able to braai. Linen and towels a bit tired. Only one bathroom has a shower, the rest are tubs with shower hose extension.
If I understand the review correctly, it would have been a 10 if the weather would have been good and no loadshedding?? In regards to 'Value for money' - guest got a 40% discount off the the low season rate; interesting observation: guests paying full rates and high season rates mostly give a much higher score for value for money than guests coming on a special. - In regards to linen: We do replace linen and towels regularly, usually once a year when the high season starts.
