How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe hosts Ian and Ali were lovely and welcoming. The location was great too, was close to shops and restaurants. It was the perfect base to tour around Cape Town and surrounding area. Bays and table too mountain and other exceptional sights are very accessible.

Verified reviewFantastic host, great location (not in city centre but near Hout Bay, Kirstenbosch Gardens, Newlands Forest), comfortable beds and sitting and dining area.
The position of the kitchen sink was a little awkward with the downward slope of the thatch (but we loved the thatch). Second bedroom OK for 2 kids but a little small for 2 adults (fortunately we were one adult per bedroom).

Verified reviewHosts Ali & Ian were friendly and courteous
This has been pointed out by several guests - the building is very awkward. It is built with a very steep roof that eats into the living spaces, my wife of 1.7m had to be careful not to bump her head against the trusses. Then you also had to climb 15 steps to reach the cabin! Kitchen is of no use, can't even wash dishes - we had to rely on eating out for the duration of our stay. TV is of no use and seriously needs an upgrade, both in hardware and software - "Open View" is VERY outdated! Bed in main bedroom needs to be replaced, worn out and very uncomfortable. There is a nice pool, but the area (braai grid, table) is not clean, could not use it. Cabin is along a very busy road (would say main road into Hout Bay) and it is very difficult to get onto the road with traffic from both sides. For the money charged, one can do better in Hout Bay!
Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable feedback. We’re sorry to read that our loft cottage did not meet your expectations. As our other reviews show, we strive to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all our guests. The cottage's thatched-roof loft design is clearly described and shown in all of our advertising—we understand that it doesn't necessarily suit everyone. As a loft, it does have stairs leading to the cottage entrance, which appear in photographs and are mentioned in our listing. The balcony at the top of the steps looking out onto the southern end of Table Mountain is a feature of upstairs living that many of our other guests love about staying here. The kitchen is equipped with a sink, dishwasher, oven and electric hob as advertised. We regret that it did not meet your needs during your stay. We will consider your comments about the TV when we consider future upgrades. We take care in maintaining the outdoor areas, including the braai and poolside space so that it is pleasant for guests. We apologize if this was not up to standard during your visit. The outside furniture is cleaned prior to the arrival of guests. As it is autumn, berries frequently fall from the trees. These are removed on a regular basis. The cottage is set-back over 100m from the main road (as shown on Google Maps) and is in a pan-handle on a little used gravel road - it is not directly on a busy main road. We understand that navigating traffic sometimes requires patience. As Hout Bay only has two main access roads, the road to Constantia Nek is busy sometimes during the tourist season and in the morning and evening. Thank you once again for your feedback Ali & Ian

The styling of the thach roof is very charming, however, low on the ends which restricts movement.

Verified reviewFriendly welcome from the owners and beautiful setting and gardens. Good value for money. Nice private plunge pool to use in such hot weather. Recommend to other travellers.
A little out of the way so definitely need a car to stay here and easy to get to places. Some of the items in the unit were a little dated and damaged, but was not really an issue for us.
Thanks for your positive comments. Please let us know what was dated or damaged so we can sort it out. Please email me. Thank you for coming to stay.

Some loungers in the garden by the pool would have been a welcome addition so that one could enjoy the tranquillity of the lovely mature garden in the pool /brai area

Verified reviewNestled in a beautiful part of Hour Bay with wonderful mountain views, this apartment is a self-contained gem. With a private garden (and outdoor shower too), the facilities inside and out are wonderful. The hosts are friendly and knowledgeable.
Make sure you don't press random buttons or switches where you think a light switch might be as it may be a panic button, and the power outlets could be more conveniently situated.

Verified reviewThe kitchen was fully equipped. Accommodation was very spacious. Host was very helpful, will gladly stay again.
The place felt like it wasn't used in a long time. Alot of cobwebs, winter beddings. Location was a bit far off from most places.
