How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe had an amazing time! It was our favourite place of the trip! They care so much about the animals and went on an incredible game drive too where we learnt a lot about the animals! The owners are so kind and you can tell how much they care for their property and guests😊 We will definitely be back when we are next in South Africa!

Verified reviewIt was a fabulous 4 day break. We were close enough to town to have a day there too.A lovely lot of animals and we had a great safari. The staff were just lovely and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in the tent which we had no problem with and the kitchenette was more than adequately stocked with utensils. We actually ate breakfast and dinner in the lodge for our time there but it is totally up to you if you want to eat there or with your own food.in your accommodation. Thank you HPGP.

You could not do a self-drive around the reserve if you did not have a 4x4 vehicle.

Everything is additional- simple coffee from the Maschine will be charged, for the price breakfast should be included. Verified reviewBreakfasts were good but at R 175 are a bit overpriced.
Bed was only ‘double’ and not Queen size. Very sad and not good that they only have one Rhino and one Hippo!
Dear Tom, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the breakfasts, though we understand your thoughts on the pricing. The breakfast includes coffee, tea and juice, a muesli fruit cocktail with yogurt and a full breakfast, however, we’ll take that into consideration as we continually evaluate our offerings. Regarding the bed size, we’d like to clarify that our beds are indeed queen size. We’re sorry if there was any confusion or if it didn’t feel as spacious as expected. As for the rhino and hippo, we share your sadness. We tragically lost a mother and calf to a serious illness and another during transportation which was heartbreaking for all of us. Additionally, our hippos managed to escape the farm and, as wild animals do, we suspect they’ve settled on a neighbouring property. While it’s disappointing, we remain committed to protecting and caring for the wildlife on our reserve. We’re actively working with Cape Nature to reintroduce more rhino and hippo to the reserve, although this process takes time. We’re also excited to share that we’re in the final stages of introducing lions to the reserve in 2025, which will add an exciting new chapter to our conservation efforts. Thank you for understanding, and we hope to welcome you back in the future for an even better experience. Kind Regards Hartenbos Private Game Lodge team

Verified reviewWhat I loved most about the accommodation was how unique and close to nature the experience was. Staying in a tent with breathtaking views of giraffes right outside made it feel like a dream. The peaceful surroundings and the opportunity to connect with wildlife from the comfort of our tent were truly special. The food was another highlight – dinner and breakfast were both outstanding. I appreciated that vegetarian options were easily accommodated, and the portions were generous and delicious. The game drive was unforgettable; being so close to magnificent animals was magical, and the morning coffee break during the drive was a charming touch. The accommodations were also incredibly comfortable and clean, with thoughtful touches like heated mattresses that made our stay cozy and relaxing. The staff were warm and welcoming, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, I loved everything about this place – the unique tented stay, the fantastic food, the incredible safari experience, and the friendly people. It was a perfect getaway, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special and unforgettable experience.
We truly loved everything about our stay, but if I had to mention one small detail, it would be the size of the bed. As my husband is quite tall (1.90m), he found it a bit small and not entirely comfortable. However, this was such a minor issue that it didn’t take away from the overall experience, which was absolutely perfect in every other way. Everything else exceeded our expectations, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this amazing place.
Dear Isabela, Thank you for such an incredible and detailed review! It’s wonderful to know that the unique tented accommodations, the breathtaking wildlife views, and the peaceful surroundings made your visit so special. We’re also delighted that you enjoyed the food, especially the generous portions and vegetarian options, and that the game drive left such a magical impression. We appreciate your understanding regarding the bed size and will take your feedback into account. It’s lovely to know that this minor detail didn’t impact your overall experience. It was a pleasure hosting you and your family at our lodge, and we hope to welcome you back soon for another unforgettable getaway! Kind Regards Hartenbos Private Game Lodge team
