Eco Karoo Lodge was simply amazing. I wanted to take time away from the city and be in nature and the lodge was a perfect choice for this. The location is simply amazing, breathtaking views. The design and decor of the lodge is also pretty great. Loved my time here. Before I booked I was worried about the drive based on previous reviews but it’s wasn’t bad at all, just a few kilometres of dirt road from the town to the farm and all you have to do is to drive carefully, any car is suitable I think.

The drive there was not 2 but 3 hours. There is a 16km gravel road to reach the property and is not ideal for a regular car. I highly suggest using a bakkie/suv.

The views on the property were amazing. Chris checked us in an explained and detail the layout of the property, so we knew where everything was. It was peaceful and offered a break from a busy environment.

The roads getting there was an absolute bloody nightmare. There are major ongoing roadworks to and from Luckhoff which made for unpleasant traveling. Once the roads are done it would be much better. The road between Koffiefontein and Petrusburg to get back to the N1 is pothole upon pothole which made for a hazardous and stressful travelling experience. Then the road outside Luckhoff towards the Lodge must be the worst dirt road I have ever experienced. It is in such a state of disrepair that merely grading it is not going to help. The 4km to the turn-off to the main farm road is atrocious and we had to crawl at a mere 15km/h. The corrugation is so bad that any speed above this threatened to rip the car apart. You will do you car serious damage. Almost off-road. At the end of a long day's travel it was a serious challenge (we came up all the way from Three Sisters). It is definitely not an overnight destination if you are travelling to or from the Cape. I really regretted my decision to move that far off the N1. As a destination itself, it was simply not worth it, as there are no game viewing opportunities or anything else for that matter.

It is a beautiful facility and the site was well planned. It was modern and one can see a lot of thought and effort went into it. The Wifi was also exceptional. All rooms have their own fire places which was very nice in the cold Free State Autumn air. The communal kitchen is well equipped and they also has a very nice gas braai, which was for communal use. A plunger might be added to the coffee making equipment. We wanted to braai on wood and was charged R70 for a bundle of wood, which seem extravagant, but the bag was quite big. They also provided an option to buy wine and the price for a bottle of red wine was more than reasonable (R120 for a descent 2019 Merlot). It might be a good idea to offer bagged charcoal as an alternative to wood for a braai, because it took quite a while for the fire to generate coals. We used most of our wood to make fire in the hearths in the room.
