Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsThe room we had had no view, the window was very smal. That was a pity and a bit dissappointing. We stayed only 3 nights and were out in town most of the day so this was not a big thing. Melville unfortunately has lost a lot of its original vibe and buzz, many shops and bars in 7th Street were closed and to let.
Breakfast is very good. The staff is very friendly. SWe stayed regularly in Agterplaas in the past

United StatesSome of the room fixtures are old and whimsical, but that's part of the charm of the place. In any case, everything was perfectly functional and I had no problems.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Agterplaas Guesthouse. Since I was travelling alone, I was looking for an accommodation that might allow me to meet people and have interesting conversations, and the guesthouse offered me exactly that experience! Melville is a very pretty and quiet part of Johannesburg. The neighbourhood felt safe to me, but I didn't walk around the area much since all the sites I wanted to visit were located in other parts of the city. However, like many places in Johannesburg, the guesthouse was highly gated and I was given multiple keys to navigate several doors and gates around the property. The rooms were quaint and beautiful. The hosts were always ready to attend to my requests (such as my needing an additional power adapter), and even graciously upgraded my room for free since they had a last-minute cancellation. I therefore got to enjoy a much larger room with a detached tub and large bay windows looking out into the balcony. The free breakfast included with my reservation was absolutely fantastic! I honestly don't think I've had a better hotel breakfast anywhere in the world. Rather than just the standard buffet fare one finds in most hotels, they have an à la carte menu and everything has a sumptuous local flavour. Their bobotie is to die for, and I made sure to take the recipe from them so I could try making it at home. They can also provide other meals upon request, but make sure to reserve them in advance. Finally, I would like to offer a special thanks to Agterplaas' owners and managers, Elroy and Annemie. They were both incredibly warm, friendly and inviting people who made me feel right at home. On one of my nights there, I had a long conversation with them and some other guests about South African history and culture, which was an especially enriching experience to me as a professional scholar. By the end of my stay, they felt like old family friends.

Elroy, Annamie and all their team couldn't have been more helpful. Nothing was a problem from them, even when I arrived with an unplanned car and they made a parking space available for me.

United KingdomLovely house filled with antique furniture. Amazing breakfast with freshly baked bread. We were able to keep the car in the garage and use the facilities until our departure in the afternoon. Melville turned out to be a lovely area - ceatives live and work here. Lively bars, excellent cafes and some restaurants in short walking distance. Our room was huge.

ItalyThere is nothing to improve: of course this is not a luxury accomodation, you get a simple room with all the necessary amenities (comfortable bed, airy room, good shower) and no particular frills, but this is exactly what's needed on a short budget. Breakfast à la carte is exceptional for the price.
I don't think Agterplaas could be better from a quality for price perspective. Position-wise Melville is a walkable neighborhood in Johannesburg (many close by restaurants), which is very relaxing, considering the city. The most interesting attractions in town are a few minutes Uber from the place and the airport is still not a very long Uber ride. The house is very warm and welcoming as well as the owners. We reached the place at about 9am on Saturday morning and were planning to leave very early (5 am) on Sunday morning: they were kind enough to offer us the included (excellent) breakfast on Saturday morning! The room was simple but comfortable. The whole place is beautiful in a charming familiar way, with a very nice, peaceful garden. We were sorry we had to leave so quickly as this is the kind of home far from home where you can envisage yourself spending some nice relaxing days (e.g. I feel it would be a very good candidate for smart working people).

Breakfast was absolutely delicious - their vetkoek made me so nostalgic - haha my inner child thanks them! I was a bit late getting to the guesthouse to check in and they were extremely understanding and helpful - really put my mind at ease. Love the decor, adorned with so much artistic character and authenticity! Outdoor spaces were so refreshing! Would totally recommend!
