How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe loved our 5 day stay in Vaea Hotel. Such friendly hosts! The private swimming pool and surrounding garden is very beautiful and tranquil. The breakfast was more than adequate for us and well presented. The upstairs room had insect screens on all windows and was well ventilated. The a/c worked fine. We paid the $50tala/week for wifi in room on arrival. This was well worth it. The wifi strength and speed was excellent. Easy pickup for taxis here and 3 grocery stores very close. Great cafe and interesting shops hidden down the street. We loved the voucher for Coffee Roaster Cafe! A great friendly Samoan experience!
There is a full bar here, maybe we could have an occasional happy hour/cocktail hour? A welcome road sign out front? Could we maybe choose free wifi OR breakfast? Or have both? Is it time for a white paint refresh? Could we have an umbrella and table at the pool? ❤️

Verified reviewCleanliness of the rooms, pool and outdoor dining area, location and security of the property. Host were friendly and helpful and it was easy to walk to local cafes/restaurants/shops for a bite to eat. The breakfast included in the rate was wonderful.
Wifi not factored into the room price, unable to use the pool area whilst waiting on room to avail and property signage was not easily visible to locate when we were being transferred from prior property.

Verified reviewRooms are very nice. Breakfast area is very pleasant as is the pool. Centrally located.
Two of the staff were not that friendly. We asked for breakfast 15 minutes early one morning, it was refused. Had to pay for WiFi, hardly anywhere in the world in this day and age do you have to pay.
Talofa Gary, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed our rooms, breakfast area, pool, and central location. We would like to clarify a couple of points for future guests’ understanding. Our booking page clearly states that WIFI is chargeable—a standard practice across Samoa. While some larger hotel chains may advertise & quote Free WIFI, the cost is often built into significantly higher room rates. We choose to keep our pricing transparent and competitive. Regarding breakfast times, we follow a set schedule to ensure consistent service for all guests and maintain an efficient workflow for our staff. While we always try to accommodate special requests where possible, changes outside of our system can create disruption, especially during peak periods. Regards. Management.

Verified reviewA family run small motel. Friendly owner. Nicely decorated garden and pool area. Nice breakfast. Location is alright, walking distance to town, walking back to motel at night is a bit dark, and there are dogs wondering around. (I guess it might be normal in Samoa) owner are very friendly too, , provide handle advice to us. Have aircon which is important in Samoa hot weather.
The biggest drawback for us is no WiFi……
Talofa and thank you for your feedback! We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed our garden, pool area, air-conditioned rooms, and our hospitality. Your kind words about our breakfast and helpful service mean a lot to us. We would like to kindly clarify an important point for future guests: WIFI is indeed available at our property. As stated on our booking pages, there is an additional charge for WIFI access. This is standard practice across most accommodations in Samoa, with only a few high-end resorts including it in their higher room rates. Regarding the dogs – you're absolutely right. As with many tropical destinations in the Pacific and parts of Asia, dogs are a common part of the local environment. Thank you again for your stay and for taking the time to leave a review. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Fa'afetai lava, Management.

To Anonymous, We would like to clarify that you did not actually stay with us, as you cancelled your booking reservation on the same day as your scheduled arrival. While your cancellation fell outside our stated policy, we still extended a partial refund as a goodwill gesture, which you acknowledged and thanked us for at the time. We are therefore very surprised to see a low-rated review, particularly one referencing aspects such as room cleanliness and breakfast offerings —areas you never experienced firsthand because you did not actually stay with us. It is disheartening to receive criticism despite going beyond our policy to accommodate you. Reviews are most helpful to future guests when they reflect an actual stay and provide fair, honest insight. We encourage genuine guests to read reviews from verified stays, and we always welcome constructive feedback from those who have truly experienced our hospitality. Regards, Management.

The furnishing is slightly out dated, however this was not that big of an issue since everything else was so great.

Hello Tom, Thank you very much for taking the time out to post a review for us. For the general public and prospective Guests information - WIFI is not free in Samoa, although some high-end Resorts include free WIFI in their Rates. Verified reviewThe rooms while not extravagant had everything we needed and were clean and comfortable. The pool was really great to have and the garden lovely. The owners clearly care that the accommodation is charming and comfortable. Nice breakfast too with breads, every kind of jam, eggs, fruits, instant cafe, tea, milk.
Really the only thing we would have wanted more was espresso cafe and free WiFi, but both are honestly a hard ask even in Apia.

Verified reviewAt this family-run, small hotel in Apia, the staff are very kind and accommodating. They provide good advice, help with getting taxis and making calls and were willing to store my luggage while I went to Savaii. Very nice people! The building and grounds are like a family home. The garden, reception and patio area are lovely. My room, which was on the second floor had a nice view of the garden and the hills. The location is pretty good, but it takes some time, at least 15-20 minutes, to walk to the main part of town. There are a few places nearby to have lunch, but most restaurants are a taxi ride or longer walk away. I only ate the breakfast once. It included nice toast with butter and jams, peanut butter etc, plus fruit. The fried egg was pre-cooked, so it was cold, but I understand it is a small hotel. One morning I saw some pancakes! Overall, I recommend this hotel as a cozy and friendly local place to stay
I would prefer being able to get Wifi at no additional cost, but perhaps I am used to that from my country. Instead I went to Vodafone and got a simcard and package, but I had needed internet urgently and couldn't access it until I did that. I opted for the simcard as it would give me access throughout my trip to Samoa. But really, I have no complaints and would stay there again.

Verified reviewDen and Lupe were so friendly and helpful. Gave lots of good advice. Swimming pool clean and refreshing and garden was lush and beautiful. Enjoyed being in a non-touristy area and only 2 minutes walk to the best coffee roasters cafe in Apia. 5 minutes walk to best Chinese food outside of China. It is however close to a very busy road so in the daytime the traffic noise is loud. It dies right down at night though. To be replaced by barking dogs! Breakfast was nice with fresh pawpaw, kiwifruit, orange and avocado as well as a fried egg and toast. Comfortable beds, good Aircon, nice balcony. Wifi is an extra WST50 for a week but that gets you a modem in your room so very reliable.
Dear Jenny, Thank you so much for your lovely and detailed review! It was an absolute pleasure having you stay with us, and we're so glad to hear that you enjoyed our company. We're delighted you appreciated the peaceful garden oasis and refreshing pool, as well as the hidden gems of our neighborhood – from that amazing coffee just around the corner to the unforgettable Chinese cuisine nearby! Your thoughtful mention of both the vibrant atmosphere during the day and the quieter, local charm at night is such a helpful insight for future guests. Thank you also for highlighting our tropical breakfast offerings and the comfort of the rooms – we’re happy to know the aircon, comfy beds, and private balcony added to your experience. We do our best to offer reliable and flexible WiFi, so we’re glad the in-room modem worked well for you. Verified reviewThe owners were delightful.
We were disappointed that the swimming pool was not available, however we were informed after booking that the pool would not be available. The hosts gave us a voucher for coffee at a nearby coffee shop, nice gesture. We were unable to buy a glass of wine at the hotel although there did seem to be spirits available. There were rather a lot of loose dogs on our walk from the hotel into town which we found intimidating.
Talofa Maggie, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. It was a real pleasure having you stay, and we're truly glad to hear you found us delightful – that means a lot! We do understand your disappointment about the swimming pool being unavailable during your visit. While we tried our best to inform guests ahead of time, we know it’s never ideal to miss out on a facility you were looking forward to. We appreciate your understanding, and we're happy the coffee voucher was a small but welcome gesture. We’re also sorry to hear about the inconvenience regarding the wine service and the presence of loose dogs during your walk. We will take your feedback regarding the wine service into consideration as we continue to improve our offerings. As for the dogs, we completely understand how that can be unsettling – we're currently speaking with local authorities to help address the situation in the area for everyone’s safety and peace of mind. Your feedback is genuinely appreciated, and we hope we’ll have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for a more complete and relaxing experience. Regards, Management Team

Verified reviewUnlike many of the hotels in the heart of Apia, Vaea is perfect for visitors who aren't interested in drinking late into the night around the bar or busy swimming pools. The location means you can access everything in town with a walk or short taxi ride. For those wanting to tour the rest of the island, it is a nice base where you can head off for the day knowing your belongings are safe in your room.
The dogs along the road. During the day they aren't a problem at all, but as soon as the sun goes down or even at dusk, they can be aggressive. This means if you want to walk in the early hours or evening, when it is cooler, you're limited. I'd love to see the government do something about this, particularly in the town area. In the wider villages, its understandable, but not in the town centre.
Talofa Alison, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience at Vaea. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and found our location convenient for exploring Apia and the rest of Upolu. We take great pride in offering a safe and comfortable base for our guests, and it's wonderful to know that this added to your overall experience.
