How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Maybe a small sofa or couch in the kitchen area would be nice.
The location is perfect, close to the train station and in a great neighborhood as well! The place was clean and everything worked well.

The apartment is really cute and clean. It has all the facilities what you would need. The bed was comfortable and big enough for 2. The location is convenient, the Newark Penn station is roughly 10 mins away by walk. There is a delicious bakery around the corner. Very good quality for the money and the host is really helpful and easy to communicate with.

Try to avoid coming home after midnight. Not everybody on the streets around might have the best intentions then.
It is a really nice accommodation, if you do not mind to travel 40 - 45 minutes to New York. Very clean and modern. Good contact with the owner. During the day the neighbourhood is lovely and lively.

I was there during a heat wave. The AC in the main room was fine, but there was only a window fan in the bedroom. This made it a bit hard to sleep at night.
The location was convenient to walk to Newark Penn Station as well as the Harrison Path train station. The apartment was clean and spacious enough.

We assumed kitchenette might include a stove too. Might be worth clarifying there is no stove.

A proper dining table would be appreciated, shower curtain is too short
Super clean unit situated in a Portuguese neighbourhood, surrounded by restaurants & cafes & supermarkets, just 15min walk to Newark Penn Station to take PATH train to downtown Manhattan, heating and air conditioning are available, hot water with good pressure even at top floor, Internet TV oven coffee machine microwave plates cups bowls salt pepper sugar coffee powder all provided, we were able to check in much earlier, host Marcelo was nice and helpful!

All good, just to write something the mattress was to soft.
Very nice and cozy apartment, with private toilet, small kitchen and separate bedroom. Great location if you consider to stay out of manhattan, takes 20 min on the subway to reach World Trade Center (lower Manhattan 2,75 dollars). The host Marcelo was always available and answers very fast. I do recommend you Van Buren Gem 2.0 Great coffee shops near by, Portugal avenue, amazing food.

My stay at this apartment was delightful! The location is safe and very convenient while the apartment itself was impeccably clean, warm and with all the amenities needed. The host was incredibly accommodating and attentive. Highly recommended!

My daughters stayed in Van Buren Gem 2.0 for 11 days in Oct 2023. They enjoyed their stay very much. They felt comfortable and very safe. Marcelo (host) is very nice, friendly, and promptly responsive (thank you Marcelo). The location is truly superb, walking distance (few minutes) to New Wark Penn Station and many bus stations, going to virtually everywhere in New York and New Jersy. They felt quite save walking in the streets even at night. The people in the neighborhood look friendly and safe. We should rate (10), it deserves 10. However, we rated 9 because of very minor cons such as the lack of more kitchen facilities. Yet, honestly, the host did not claim a big kitchen! We, without doubt, should stay there again in future visits.

Third floor, hot, only window unit a/c (which they want you to turn off every time you leave even though it was almost 80 degrees when I got there). They charged me a $70 pet fee even though I have a SERVICE DOG! His excuse: dogs shed and people could be allergic. 1.) I've NEVER been charged a fee for my service dog 2.) Made me think that they do NOT normally clean & sanitize the unit between every visitor like they should. Some bug bit my neck the first night. And there were gnats flying around.
They sent good entry instructions so I was looking forward to it, but it did not live up to any of my expectations. The location was decent for my dog because there were parks about 3 blocks away.
