How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe room was fantastic and the location was good to explore the surrounding area. We would stay here again.
The room was warm and to access the temperature you had to contact the owners (text, phone....) as you could not adjust it in the room. It was a smart thermostat that was behind a plastic lock cover.

Felt a bit remote. Air conditioning difficult to regulate. Oven would not heat.

Verified reviewAn incredible 5-Star Boutique Hotel experience...Something you are not likely to find in Missouri! The suite was well appointed with original and repro furnishing to match the ambiance of the Vaudeville era. The extra amenities for guests were richly orchestrated for travelers exploring either Hermann or taking a break from the Katy trail. Everything from a refrigerator stocked with water and condiments to a selection of boutique bath soaps and personal cleansers all the way to fresh fruit and even a frozen pizza in the freezer for bike/foot travelers along the trail who might encounter inclement weather and unlikely to proceed into Hermann for provisions during their stay. This sort of ambiance and attention to detail is very rare in accommodations these days and should not be missed!
McKittrick is a couple of miles north of Hermann and across the river from the conveniences of a city. McKittrick is an old Missouri river town so its a bit removed from modernity, however, if you have a vehicle or don't mind the extra distance its super quiet and incredibly relaxing. Additionally, The Mercantile is not staffed and reliant on full electronic access so it has a more AirBnB feel to the guest on-boarding experience.

Verified reviewJust about everything! This is a very cyclist friendly spot on the Katy Trail! We were pleasantly surprised with the space. There was a complete, well stocked kitchen in addition to bedroom, bathroom and living room. We were able to walk to a grocery store to cook a meal! There was also washer and dryer.
I don't like self check-in. It is just my personal bias.

Verified reviewBeautifully furnished and maintained. Very thoughtful amenities (various soaps, shampoos, cooking gear, etc). The location on the Katy Trail is perfect. You can tell that much though and effort was put into this little apartment.
Bed pillows! WAY too big..can't sleep with them. They are very high quality, but far too thick...bring your own if you can. Also, someone lives above the apartment, and the noise of their footsteps woke us up several times. The bedroom is all hard surfaces and boomy. I used good earplugs, but it wasn't enough.
Hi Bruce, Thanks so much for your detailed review. I’m glad you enjoyed the furnishings, amenities, and location—we’ve put a lot of care into creating a great experience for guests like you. I really appreciate the feedback about the pillows. We’ll be adding softer, lower-profile options soon so future guests have a choice. Regarding the noise, just to clarify: no one lives upstairs. The entire building is part of a landmark 1800s property, and it’s been soundproofed as much as the structure allows. That said, during peak seasons like Maifest, wine trails, weddings, and cycling events, we do have guests in all suites, and sometimes their schedules don’t line up. Thanks again for staying with us—we value your input and hope to see you again on the trail. Best, Olga

Hi Barbara, Thanks for your feedback. I'm sorry you missed my message—I always reach out after checkin to ask guests about air preferences so I can get the temperature right for each guest. Since the building is historic and we use central systems, we handle adjustments on our end, but I’m always happy to tailor it to your comfort when I hear from you. I appreciate you letting me know, and I hope the rest of your stay was enjoyable. Warm regards, Olga

Verified reviewVery convenient and great location. Away from the crowds but still close very close to the festivities. The property was very clean, and had everything we needed. Perfect for a weekend trip to Hermann or for a stop on your Katy Trail adventure. This will be our go to property in the future.
Walls are thin and could hear the noise from others staying in the building.

Verified reviewMy teenage daughter and I were riding bikes on the KATY trail - this elegant property is right along the trail.
The only thing which would be helpful is a better sign for exactly where the property is. Just a simple sign would be useful.

Verified reviewI cannot say enough about The Mercantile! When we opened the door we were greeted by an amazing smell!! You walk in and everything is clean and very welcoming.!! The owner ensures that you feel like you are at a resort. There is nothing that has been not thought about … from the bathroom spray to the first aid kit (both were needed for our visit) I was very impressed… and you will be too. It’s also the perfect distance from Herman and right on the Katy Trail if biking!
