Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesNothing, we enjoyed our stay!
The staff is very friendly and polite, the rooms were basic (that was expected), we were in a pet friendly room., but the room was very clean and comfortable. The Swell motel has a nice gift shop on site, a pavilion setup as a cooking station with all you need to prepare yourself or family a meal, a nice fish cleaning station, an area for live music on Saturday evenings, an area for the little kids to enjoy, then they also have corn hole boards to use, horseshoe pits w/ the shoes, and bikes for you to use during your stay. Although we didn’t use it all, we liked what they did to the old Falcon motel, now Swell motel. We will definitely be staying again!! Plus they have all you need around you: restaurants, stores, gas stations and a bait shop just down the road and across from that is the entrance to the lighthouse/beach.

United StatesI wish there would have been a couch or something else to sit on and I felt like the floors could have been a little cleaner. (I know it’s at the beach and there will be sand regardless of how much you clean but our feet were dirty after walking on the floor)
Very accommodating and several things to do that the motel offers.

United StatesThere is nothing that I can enter here. I enjoyed everything about the motel and facilities.
The motel is located in Buxton, NC, which is about 20 minutes north of Hatteras. The hotel is near many good restaurants and attractions. The motel is dated, but it looks to have recently been updated with new flooring, fresh paint, free wifi, and lots of electrical outlets to plug in electronics and chargers. The TV system is Roku-driven and includes Netflix. You can access other services you subscribe to by signing in, which is good to have during stormy weather days. Otherwise, why go to the beach to sit indoors and watch TV? The staff was very friendly and informative about where to go and what to do in the area. There is a hose for cleaning your vehicle after a day on the sand, or washing up after cleaning fish. The units are not kitchen-equipped, and the local restaurants are mostly not cooking up your fresh catch due to county health suggestions/regulations, so bring coolers to pack your fish home in. They have an air hose on a compressor for blowing up inflatables, or in my case, fixing a screw-damaged tire and reinflating it.

United StatesThe bathroom could use an updated floor. Being a dog friendly room has its challenges. This is not a deal breaker though just a suggestion.
The room has lots of space, not cramped. Included are the use of bikes and my favorite, kayaks! You launch into a lovely channel. The grilling areas have excellent grills and set up is well thought out. There is a clothesline that is incorporated into the outside post, on porch, with colorful clothes pins! You can walk to restaurants, pizza, ice cream. A market (Connolly's) has everything you need. Very dog friendly! The staff at Swell are very helpful indeed!

United StatesIt might seem pricey. A couple of years ago it cost us about $140 per night and this stay it was about $157 per night total. Most everything costs more these days especially since Covid and the last several years of ridiculous inflation. You have to remember it is all about location, location, location. This is a beautiful part of our country and the "Swell Motel" is a nice place to stay to enjoy it. Peak summer travel season might be a lot different as the Outer Banks is a very popular destination. But that is a whole different story yet to be determined by us. Anytime we are down there we will try to book a stay at the "Swell Motel".
My wife and I stayed here on our 1st visit to the Outer Banks a couple of years ago. It is easy to find and a nice location. It is and older property, possibly 70's. They were renovating some of the rooms back then. We stayed in one of the renovated rooms this time. The room was very nice, spacious, clean and comfortable. Plenty of storage space. It also had a mini fridge, microwave and I believe a coffee maker. There is an outdoor area to relax in with tables/chairs etc. and a swimming pool. The owners are very nice and helpful people. The motel also sits across the street from an awesome seafood restaurant called the "Diamond Shoals Seafood and Market". It is family run and they have their own fishing boat(s). Catch of the day specials. We have enjoyed both our stays at the "Swell Motel" on Hatteras Island and hope to make it back out there in the future.
