How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe location of the Inn is terrific and it's very unique. Definitely one of a kind. Wonderful homemade breakfast with excellent coffee! The grounds are beautiful with exceptional plantings and very peaceful. My bed was extremely comfortable. Great water pressure in the shower - always a bonus in an older facility! John and Marie are friendly, talented hosts who I enjoyed getting to know. They are the main reason I will be back. :)

Verified reviewExcellent breakfast!! Our room was in front of a fire pit on the bottom floor of the Inn.
The exit from the Inn is in a blind curve, and there are signs up, but I nearly got hit by a car. The bed was so high that we almost could not get in without the help of a step at the base,

Verified reviewStaff (Jon and Marie) is wonderful - they made you feel like it's home! I was in a pet friendly room with double queen beds, which had enough space to accommodate everyone (they even include a water/food bowl for your pet). Microwave and mini refrigerator also a nice and welcome plus! Breakfast was superb - much better than most chain hotels we see around.
We went to take a shower late night and we saw there was none shower gel in the bathroom (only shampoo). I know for sure staff would bring right away, but we didn't want to go to front desk for it, so we used our own soap bar.

Ice machine was broken and it was a boil water advisory. Those things were out of their control and the owners went above and beyond dealing with the situation.

Verified reviewProperty is nicely landscaped. Our room was clean and quiet. After hearing what would be served for breakfast, we decided to head out early and eat in Bryson City at Mountain Perk Coffee Shop. Neither of us wanted a big breakfast.
Once we started settling into the room, I noticed that there no hand soap at the sink in the bathroom. The only soap in the room was in the dispensers in the shower - inconvenient for handwashing. The light switch in the toilet/shower part of the bathroom was connected to the exhaust fan which was very loud. The floor was uneven in front of the bed - not enough to trip over but a bit unsettling as you walked across the room And speaking of uneven walking surfaces, the whole outdoor area walkways are uneven. Neither of us has trouble walking but we were both very careful where we walked. Someone with mobility issues or a child walking along and not paying close attention could easily trip and fall and get hurt badly. We stayed on the first floor so I cannot speak to the steps up to the higher floors. The website mentions that this property is within easy walking distance of downtown Bryson City. It is on the side of a mountain tucked into a blind curve with a lot of traffic. Once you start away from it, you are walking down the mountain into town and it is not an easy walk down nor would it be an easy one back up. I am thankful that we only booked one night. Live and learn!
Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear you found the property nicely landscaped and that your room was clean and quiet—those are two things we strive to deliver consistently for all our guests. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts about the breakfast offering. While many of our guests enjoy the rotating morning selections we provide, we understand that preferences vary and are happy to know you found a good local option that suited your tastes. Regarding the hand soap, we apologize for the oversight. Each guest room is stocked with hand soap, and it sounds like we may have missed replenishing that in your room prior to check-in. We’ll make sure our team checks more carefully moving forward. Your comments about the bathroom fan, the flooring, and outdoor walkways are all noted and appreciated. Our property, like many historic inns in the Smoky Mountains, does have a unique layout and terrain, and we recognize that may present challenges for guests with mobility concerns. We're actively exploring ways to improve comfort and accessibility while preserving the charm of the Inn’s setting. As for walking to downtown, it’s just under a mile away, and while many guests enjoy the stroll, it’s true that the walk involves a downhill and uphill slope. For those who prefer, we typically recommend driving the short distance, especially in the evenings or if mobility is a concern. We truly value guest insight as it helps us continue to refine the experience. Thank you again for staying with us, and we wish you many safe and enjoyable travels ahead. Warm regards, Marie & John VanDervoort Innkeepers, McKinley Edwards Inn

Mattress on bed had deep spot. People above us walked around a lot making noise. Other than that it was great.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re so glad you found the Inn clean and enjoyed our hospitality—it means a lot to us. We appreciate your feedback about the mattress and the noise from the room above. We’re currently in the process of assessing all mattresses for wear, and your note helps us prioritize that effort. As for the noise, we understand how that can impact rest, and we’re exploring solutions to improve sound insulation in our historic building. Thank you again for staying with us—we truly enjoyed hosting you and hope to welcome you back in the future! Warm regards, Marie & John VanDervoort Innkeepers, McKinley Edwards Inn
