Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe location was fantastic, right near the beach and also the Amtrak station. The staff were so friendly and helpful - I’d accidentally booked the wrong dates and they sorted it out and rearranged for me no problem. The hostel was clean with great facilities (curtains on the beds for privacy which was great). And they did a brilliant open mic night when I was there, loved it!

GermanyThe dorms are a little small, so when several people arrive with big suitcases, you'll have to move stuff around all the time. Also, it was noisy at night because of the train station and a loud fan in the room. But the hostel provides free earplugs :) The hostel is not cheap, but Santa Barbara is crazy expensive, so for SB standards, the value is good.
Great hostel that makes it easy to feel at home. Well-equipped kitchen you can use, comfy common area, and outdoor seating. The dorm beds have curtains to give you a bit more privacy. Very friendly and helpful staff and lots of activities to join. It's easy to meet people there, and it doesn't feel anonymous like many other hostels in the US. Breakfast is DIY pancakes with chocolate chips and peanut butter, and sometimes bananas. I got some fruit at a nearby supermarket, and that made for a fantastic breakfast. Location is awesome too, right next to the beach and close to State Street.

United StatesWhat i kinda learned from staff is that you have to stay focused on what you hope to accomplish in order not to get swept away from your stay. Sometimes the immediate can distract you from any goals you may have. But by and large it's good to consider what others are up to, and possibly consider afresh what you want out of life (or at least... out of your vacation, vocation (ie. washing your own DC dishes)).
So surprised it was more than a bed to sleep in. The first night Maxine supplied s'mores fixings, and got a fire going. Rosey had such a big smile when I first checked in. I learned how much work went in to keeping the facility humming. Alejandro and Hailey kept the place spic n span. Kai and Stella were hosting Soup yoga and dance the night I left, and if I could've I would have loved to postpone my departure, but all my connections were already booked and paid for. The vibe of the place was so friendly and accommodating, which made chit chat and more possible. I loved meeting the 11th graders from a local high school (german). Internationals, I guess, had somehow heard of this place - are we all the same? Americans who travel were present. It seemed to be germans, of which I am about 1/2. When I first came I was afraid to eat - was it really for me? The second night there was spaghetti, and I asked could I have some. Maxine made the most excellent cake for pot luck night. Iwas embarrassed because I didn't have anything to offer, but no one made it an issue, and like the good Jewish mother would say, Eat, eat. I enjoyed meeting people in a setting so conducive to friendship, and would heartily recommend it to shy people.

GermanyI stayed at ITH Hostel in Santa Barbara for a week and had an amazing experience! For a hostel, it really exceeded my expectations. The staff were super friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was welcoming, and it was easy to meet other travelers. Everything was clean and well-maintained, and the location is perfect—just a short walk from downtown and the beach, also directly located at the Amtrak station. They also offer fun activities and free breakfast, which added a lot to the experience. I’d definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for affordable and social accommodation in Santa Barbara!

United StatesI loved everything. Location could not be better. Steps from Amtrak so arriving at 6am and leaving at 6:30am was easy. The beach and piers are a 5 minute walk. I only regret is that I couldn't stay longer.

United StatesI had a super early flight and should have probably gotten a single room vs being in the dorm. I only woke up a couple of times so had it been a normal schedule it wouldn’t have been an issue
The property was clean, comfortable and had a lot of fun seating areas and lots of things you could borrow (that previous travelers had left). The staff are all so incredibly kind and welcoming

Costa RicaIt was one of the most welcoming hostels I have ever been, they were all so gentle and warm and specially Gerald and Reuben they both made us feel like home, we arrived on Thanksgiving so they invited us to join dinner and table games afterwards, we really enjoyed it. Besides there is parking available, the bed was so comfortable and we loved the breakfast. We were just staying a night since we were on a roadtrip but there were so many activities you could do, I would totally come back!

DenmarkSanta Barbara hostel was the first hostel on my way up from Los Angeles to San Francisco and I gotta say it was my favourite one! I only spent my night, but I could tell that it's very travelers-friendly as there were daily activities and a whatsapp group that was helpful. I also had a good rest there, the beds were quite spacious and comfortable.
