Reviews of Elmwood 1820 Bed & Breakfast Inn

How often do you get to enjoy a tremendous beautiful house like this? Everything was so large, yet decorated in a way that almost felt intimate. The porches were relaxing. The dining room was elegant. The bedrooms were so comfortable and the beds were great. Even the temperature was good.

Nothing I disliked about the property

My problem is that I used booking.com and got a discounted rate for two nights at the Elmwood 1820 B&B. It was NOT disclosed at the time of booking that NO MEAL (BREAKFAST) was included at the discounted rate. The confirmation from booking.com DID say “No meal included” but also said the reservation was NON-REFUNDABLE! I did not read the confirmation, but was rudely surprised by reading the “contactless check-in” letter taped to the front door of the inn. The breakfast time and details were crossed out on the letter. We texted the innkeeper, Richard Smoot, to complain. I don’t normally read all confirmation details … but I guess I will from here on. I said for $251 per night, breakfast SHOULD be included, even though I should have read the confirmation details from booking.com. I said I would comment in my review of the inn… which Mr. Smoot took as a threat and offered to refund the entire amount. He appeared with his partner at our room as my wife and I were unpacking and told us to leave. The exchange, needless to say, was heated. We have NEVER been thrown out of an inn, hotel or anywhere! We are senior citizens and were in town to celebrate my 73rd birthday. We packed our things and drove the 110 miles back to our home outside Raleigh. I complained to booking.com. Booking.com appears to not be concerned about this incident, as the only action they wanted taken was for me to review the B&B!! BUYER BEWARE, B&B’s use third parties to list properties, details, and conditions in web booking sites like booking.com. The arrangements are with the THIRD PARTY, and NOT with booking.com! ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT FIRST BEFORE BOOKING. YOU CANNOT TRUST BOOKING.COM or other web booking sites.

Breakfast was excellent during our stay (2 days). Locations was ~ 20 miles from our destination, but it was just far enough away to relax from a busy graduation weekend.

Beautiful estate but still needs some refurbishing in various areas.

Great staff. Fabulous breakfast. Coffee delivery in AM before breakfast as getting ready for the day. Unique decorations in The Explorer suite. No TV in the room. WiFi available although we did not use it.

Above and beyond- one of the nicest places we ever stayed- host is amazing and this place is done right. No room for improvement, perfect as is! We will be back for a longer stay- also town is charming with great dining options!

Excellent breakfast. Comfortable bed. Plenty of after hours snacks and refreshments available.

Very welcoming, both Richard and John as well as the lovely maids made us feel very much at home. The whole house was comfortable and set in a particularly peaceful neighbourhood. It was just like having your own villa with a fabulous breakfast chef serving you a beautiful tasty breakfast in an impressive dining room each morning. We parked the car on arrival and were able to do everything we wanted by foot as the town centre was only a 15 minute walk along a quiet residential road. We could spend as much time as we wished during the day and evening relaxing in our room which had a lovely sitting area or outside on the veranda or downstairs in the lounge areas. Probably the most relaxing six days we have ever spent on holiday

Nothing , even a little problem we had with our bathroom was sorted out without any fuss and nothing was too much trouble .

The staff was wonderful. The room (Explorer) was well furnished to include a sitting room. No frig in the room but they do give you "run" of the house. The dining room , Parlor, Bar room, etc. A beautiful B&B in a great location.

The owner has a cat I only got to play with her once :) A friendly little thing :)

The cost of the room and the breakfast was over priced. And the A/C was very cold at night.

Breakfast was great! I loved the house, the quaint feel and the 1800's styling. The bed slept great!

Shower head was leaking and spraying everywhere.

Using Booking.com it was not apparent that breakfast wasn't included in a "Bed & Breakfast". We did arrange for 1 day and it was excellent, but I thought that was strange for the overall concept of a bed and breakfast concept
