Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaOwl Hostel is a really cute place with a friendly and modern feel and great amenities. We enjoyed the common areas - the rooftop patio had a great view of the Sun Moon Lake sunset. Check-in and check-out were straightforward! We really appreciated the friendly staff.

JapanThe sheets were a bit itchy. They made my skin react a bit, but it might not be a problem for everyone.
Really nice area to stay. A lot of great spaces throughout the hostel to chill and relax after everything closes in the town. Close to port and one of the bus stops too.

United StatesNo parking lot. There was a free parking lot which was pointed out at check in. Having that parking location in the photos would have been helpful so we could have just parked there on arrival.
Comfortable beds! Convenient location.

GermanyAll great!
Super clean, very silent. Nice rooftop where you can spend the night when everything else is close (from 7pm on). Very friendly, free coffee, you find all you need (hairdryer, shampoo and co, laundry) and you also can buy / rent stuff like towels, toothbrushes, shaver for a very low price. The location is perfect (ita Thao is also way better to stay then shuishe in my opinion).

United KingdomThere was some miscommunication regarding ferry and bus times. We planned to go to Alishan and went to take a ferry but the times we were told weren’t accurate to the actual timetable so we had to call a taxi last minute. The ferry doesn’t start until 8:30 so it was too late for our 8am bus to Alishan.
Good location, clean and comfortable.

GermanyThe dorms were like private pods, I didn't hear anything from others and it felt like I had my own room, that was great! Enough space for luggage in there too! The shower and toilet facilities were great too, with fancy toilet! Location wise it is nicely located close to the lake and the bus stop. Sadly the food shops are a little more expansive then in bigger cities and they close early (around 7.30pm). Nice common areas, but still not social at all.

NetherlandsThe pods are spacious and comfortable. Also bonus points for providing a good low-light as well as a bright light in the pod, for if you want to read a bit in comfort before falling asleep. Toilets are fancy japanese style, showers are clean. Nice rooftop, and a great lobby area. Super nice hostel which feels like a boutique hotel. Excellent for solo travelers.

First of all, the staff is extremely friendly and kind, which makes your stay perfect. The hostel is cozy, and they have a wonderful terrace on the roof. I also left my AirPods case at the hotel, and they contacted me to let me know that someone had found it. They even offered to send it to me in Tainan, but I decided to go back and pick it up. I really appreciated their help! 😇

Czech RepublicWould like to have more kitchen towels for washing in kitchen. There was only one and the same for all of my stay (feels little bit unhygienic). - Other guests sometimes made so big mess at night, that I had to clean up the toilet so I can use it. Same with sink where they left hair and stuff. I understand staff haven't been able to do anything with that (there is not any night shift), but have to write it cuz it was part of my experience. So be prepared that you will maybe catch some neighbor's who don't clean after themselves too. - There was nothing to take for stomach problems in hostel first aid kit. There is also not real pharmacy all over the lake so I recommend everyone reading this take their own stuff. ... Trough all of little inconveniences which are mostly easy to improve (like change once in while towel in kitchen and buying more stuff into first aid kit). Biggest problem like with most of other hostels can be other guests but that's not in power of host so.
+Clean rooms, sheets and everything. Everyday is all space well and properly cleaned. +Shampoo, body gel and laundry detergent for free. +Capsule for one person are really big for enough stuff and bed really comfy. +Location is super close to main street and bus stop. +Really comfy lobby, kitchen and rooftop area (with really good view). There is just so much place to hang out all over the hostel it's really nice. +Amazing customer service (staff answered most of my questions and was open to always help+smiling) +Free coffee, water and tea. ... Overall really enjoyed my stay in this hostel and really recommend. It's really good place to be in. Just improve little details and it would be perfect.

United StatesI had an upper pod, and getting up and down the ladder with my gear bag in one hand felt a tiny bit sketchy, but it was fine!
Really nice and simple lockable pods. Cleanest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. I arrived by bicycle and was able to store my bike indoors. The dormitory was super quiet and I was almost able to stand up fully in my pod. Towel rental available.

United StatesThe bathroom floor (shared with others on the floor) got wet in the evening and the pool of water in front of the sink was not ideal, but was cleaned up in the morning. (I'm not sure people know there are towels available?!) In general though I think this is a great, in-expensive option in the much cuter town (Ita Thao) in Sun Moon Lake.
This was a solid capsule-style hostel. The best part is the staff, they are so helpful and knowledgable (helping me figure out the shuttle.) Sun Moon Lake can feel very touristy, but this space has a very nice, warm feeling. I did not shower here (lol) but they do rent towels, which I still used. The communal fridge and kitchen is helpful too, but does get a little crowded. It feels more community-driven than some of the big hotel spaces.
