This hostel is the loveliest hostel I have ever stayed in! We made the booking 3 minutes before walking in as it had the best reviews, and we didn’t have to wait at all despite the last minute booking - we were given cold towels when we walked in and the staff were so welcoming. Julius the owner explained everything about the hostel including that you can help yourself to snacks and that they do social events, such as going out for dinner together and a pre-party for the full moon party where body paint was provided. This was such a change from other hostels we’ve been in where we have been left to figure out what’s going on ourselves. The social events are such a great way to meet people, and they’re not just centred around drinking games like most other hostels - it felt like a proper backpacker hostel and everyone was there to meet other people. The rooms are great and very clean and secure too. In the morning: waffles, coffee and fruit are laid out for guests to help themselves and they were delicious - it was great to chat to Julius and other people at the hostel while enjoying the waffles, felt like a family breakfast! To top it all off, when we were leaving to get the ferry in a taxi organised by P1, we got a call saying we’d left a Kindle in the room. Julius got on a bike straight away to meet us at the pier to drop it off to us - a half an hour drive away! - it was just beyond lovely and we couldn’t believe it! It was so amazing to stay at a hostel run by people who clearly love their job so much, and have gone above and beyond to make sure everyone is looked after and included. I stayed at Funky Monkey few days for the Full Moon Party. Like a solo traveler I fully recommend the hostel to meet people. Julius, the owner, organize activities to make sure it happens. The hostel is like 5 mins away from the beach. The snack corner is a huge plus. It even has a gym 👌🏽

Funky Monkey is SO worth it. Staying during Full Moon? Expect great pre-drinks, free body paint, and a really comfortable stay at walking distance from the beach. Safety is unmatched: there are security cameras all around the property and the lockers provide plenty of storage. Staying outside of Full Moon? This is the perfect place to enjoy and explore Koh Phangan! Rooms are clean, comfortable and quiet. It’s not a party hostel- but the social atmosphere is incredible. You’ll make friends that feel like family, will always have some activity to join if you want, and enjoy the best free breakfast & snacks at the hostel. If you’re looking to relax: there’s a massive TV with games and a bunch of couches on top of the reception. Special shoutout to Julius, the owner, who goes above and beyond day in and day out to ensure his guests have a good time (I don’t know how he does it, tbh). He’ll take initiative on organizing activities, bring snacks, and is always there to help and advise you about your travels. If you’re lucky, he may even organize a group tour showing the best of what Ko Phangan has to offer! Also, special shoutout to P1! She is absolutely incredible- there to care of all the guests. When you’re going out to the beach, she’ll make sure you’ve got a beach towel with you. When you go on a hike, she’ll make sure you’ve got some water with you. When it starts raining like hell, she’ll be there to offer you a raincoat. P1 is one of the most caring and attentive people I’ve ever met - truly incredible! Huge thanks to the entire staff for making my stay so memorable 😊

This hostel focuses on one thing and one thing only: making the most out of the limited room they have. So much attention to detail, so many things for free, so clean and such nice staff. The dorm we were in was tiny tiny but in truth that might be the least important part about a hostel. Everything else was great, especially the price. There was free pizza one night in the evening, the hostel kept surprising us. You can really see they understand the backpacker's needs and experience.

It's hard to remember anything bad, but the only thing I didn't like was that for all 12 nights no one offered to change my bed linen and towels. I probably should have approached them myself with this request, but I've never been to a hostel before and don't know how it works. Of course, it's a small thing, but you can arrange for a change of linen once a week.

I stayed in this hostel for 12 nights and I can only remember good things. Starting with the polite staff, the omnipresent manager Julius, who constantly organized social events where you can meet and communicate with a huge number of people from all over the world. I was very pleased with the daily breakfasts, unlimited bottled water, as well as several evenings with dinner inside the hostel. I was surprised by little niceties like cotton buds, wet wipes, lighters and many other things. I was exited to return to the hostel in the evenings, knowing that in the evening, if you want, you can communicate with people, team up and go to a bar or a club together. Julius has created a wonderful place for a comfortable and budget holiday, and I highly recommend this hostel primarily for people who travel alone, because you will not feel lonely here.

The Funky Monkey is an amazing place. The beds are comfy and the rooms are cleaned everyday. The free breakfast is lovely and they offer free water bottles and snacks all day, as well as things like earplugs and lighters. Julius is an amazing owner, he takes care of everyone and makes the experience super fun. The ladies at reception are so helpful and always go the extra mile to make your stay comfortable. I definitely wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Koh Phangan.
