“Tokiwa Ryokan was beautiful, the location is convenient, really near the bus stop. The rooms are fancy and the amenities are thoughtful. I really liked the size, they’re nice and large, and the spa bathroom, which is shared is warm and makes the place homey. Breakfast is sumptuous and the owners are very kind.”
“First time got to experience the milk onsen, was nice. Facilities dated but it was the biggest room we had for stay, and the food was great. We saw deer out the window and monkeys on the way to the area. Staff made so much effort to communicate with us”
“We arrived with car and they have parking space in front of the hotel. We made reservation for breakfast and dinner. For dinner they serve some traditional food which I do recommend trying. The owner informed us that there was a festival happening by the lake and we had really nice time.”
“First impressions were great - Despite arriving very early and hoping, at best, to be able to stow my bag away somewhere for the day, I received a very friendly welcome, and was told I could move straight in as my bed was ready.
Beds are big and comfy (if you like a soft mattress, it's like sleeping in a cloud), towel and sheets are clean and the pillow & duvet are both fluffy.
Electric sockets & bedside light work, and the curtains on each bed close completely & are heavy enough to block out all the light & offer real privacy.
There's aircon for hot weather, and electric blankets for when it's cold, but we didn't need either during my stay.
There were 4 showers, all spotlessly clean, with plenty of hot water, and each with their own dry changing area. Only 2 toilets, but as the dorm was very far from full that wasn't a problem at all.
There's a kettle & microwave for guest use (which are clean), very handy as most food places in Nikko close early. I didn't try the cafe attached to the hostel, but 800¥ for breakfast sounds like a good deal.
The location is excellent - the best in town - as it's right in front of the train station and the bus stops most visitors use. I prefer to walk and it's a really nice walk to all the sights.
Having read other reviews of this hostel I wasn't sure what to expect - some reviewers must have very different expectations from mine - but I was delighted enough to contemplate booking an extra night simply because it's such a nice place to stay.”
“We wanted to go again and visit Nikko, but this time with our "daughter", the dog.
Nice area indeed, the facilities are really fine, and although we didn't use all the facilities, like the dog run or the others... We enjoyed the stay.
The personnel was incredibly helpful and kind, really great staff.
Our room was typical Japanese, slept on a futon, which is my kind of "softness ". The room included WC and bath facilities.
If you are there you have to make time to use the in situ Onsen, the sulfur water comes directly from the hot spring, you can actually visit, not far off... It's just fantastic to relax and tone up your skin.
The hotel also has a buffet type restaurant, it is ok, simple but good. The Buffet is also prepared for the furry companion/s so in the big room, among the tables you will see many happy families with furry children 🤓🤣🤓.
The place is good.”
“Great value for money hotel on Lake Chūzenji! Friendly, helpful staff who spoke English. Exceptional food - get the dinner package! Really authentic onsen (outside bath is HOT). Highly recommend.”
