Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomLike all of Madeira, the property is on a hillside. This means that the gateway entrance and driveway is very narrow and steep; if you have a big car, leave it on the street above the property.
Lovely room, comfy bed and huge en suite, with views over gardens and vineyards down to Funchal harbour. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Each morning, we enjoyed delicious breakfasts served daily by the very kind hostess in a beautiful garden with stunning views of Funchal and the ocean. The location is excellent, and the availability of parking was a significant convenience. Highly recommended!

Czech RepublicI had a truly memorable stay at Quinta das Malvas – Quinta de Santa Luzia in Funchal. The villa is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by a blooming garden that adds to the peaceful and charming atmosphere. The location is also excellent – quiet, yet within easy reach of the city center. What made the stay extra special was the wonderful host, Margarida. She was warm, welcoming, and always ready to help with anything I needed. And her pastéis de nata...😋 It was a perfect blend of comfort, nature, and genuine hospitality. I’d love to return one day and can only recommend this place to anyone visiting Madeira.

United KingdomThis isn't a complaint about the Quinta, but visitors should be aware that Funchal is built into a hill. If you are not particularly able bodied or used to walking, you might find the walk down into Funchal, and back up the steep incline too challenging. However, Funchal has plenty of taxis, Ubers/Bolts and busses, so walking isn't a necessity.
Quintas das Malvas turned out to be a really unique experience for us. Akin to staying in a very large B&B or small manor home in the UK. Excellent location within walking distance of the main city of Funchal/harbour area. The staff were incredibly friendly and provided lots of great suggestions of where to eat and visit. They also made lots of special treats including cakes to complement the continental buffet breakfast. The home is beautiful and it was really cool to see what a working Quintas/estate looks like in 2025. We would definitely consider returning to Quintas das Malvas, or booking out Quinta de Santa Luzia (which is a separate house on the Quintas reserved for groups) on a future visit.

United KingdomAn old, very original house, owned by a branch of the Blandy family (I am told the last of the family run wineries on the island), is full of old world colonial charm. Set high on the hill overlooking Funchal this is a real gem and a welcome change to the bland more expensive hotels in the heart of the city. An easy taxi or bus ride from the centre it has parking, great views and delightful grounds. Run by the ever helpful Margarida if you can put up with its few idiosyncrasies I can’t recommend it highly enough. A breath of fresh air.

SlovakiaI understand it is very old, almost historic building. But the squeaky old wooden floor got us to wake up several times through the night, when other guests were walking on the hallway. So not ideal for someone who has light sleep.
Very charming old farm house. Housekeepers (both Margarida and Rita) were super nice, friendly and helpful. Terrace and garden are gorgeous, you feel like in a mansion from a historic novel. Breakfast was modest but tasty.

Netherlandsdistance to city: would normally say it's walkable, but back to the hotel is pretty steep uphill so we took a (super cheap!) (Bolt) taxi both times to come back. The 2p bed was a bit small if you're not a couple.

United KingdomThere was a problem with the hot water while we were there, but not an issue to worry us, as temporary problems can happen anywhere. Otherwise, nothing.
The quiet location away from the city. Although we had no transport the local bus was quite adequate, and cheap for a weekly pass. The use of the lounges, and kettle to make drinks. But above all, the incredible willingness of Margarida to help us when we had a problem getting boarding passes for our return flight, and the general helpfulness of herself and Rita at all times.

HungaryThe estate was better than I expected: it has a large garden with beautiful flowers, has fantastic view of the city and offers free parking. The house is located on the hillside but you can reach the center of Funchal in 20-25 minutes. The room was big, very comfortable and well equipped (room "Lavender"). Rita and Margarida are very friendly and helpful, they give good hints. The breakfast is simple but plentiful. If you rent a car, the main freeway is just like 4-5 minutes from the house, which is a big plus if you travel a lot.

United StatesThe location is a bit hard to get to by foot from the center but a cap got the work done.
Quinta das Malvas honestly went way above my expectations, the house is incredibly beautiful, my room was big and had a nice view of the city. Margarida was so kind and warm, she even served me a nice breakfast upon my arrival after a 7 hour flight. The property is not in the city center, however, walking to the center is just about 15 minutes and you get to see more of Funchal.
