Very expensive

The property is very well located. The pool is lovely - but quite small and shallow so more of a large plunge pool. The rooms were comfortable as were the beds with lovely big showers. Some extra touches were missing - no tissues in the room. No shower caps and no drawers or shelves for your belongings. Lots of hanging!

I feel some things were slightly lacking for a 5* hotel e.g towels weren’t soft, the rooms were slightly small for the price (we booked junior suite and twin double room and both were almost the same), toiletries could’ve been better quality, toilet seats and bins were abit worn.

Brilliant location and nice rooms with really comfortable beds. Nice roof terrace with pool which weren’t too busy.

Sometimes the housekeeping staff would take towels away when we were still using them and not leave water but everything else was great. Only a small thing!

The reception and restaurant staff were very welcoming. The pool is beautiful with stunning views especially at night time with the hills lit up with the lights! The first round of the mini bar is free which was a welcomed surprise and the breakfast was delicious.

Not enough time spent at hotel to enjoy the full experience.

All the facilities were excellent, as was the breakfast — everything lived up to expectations. I was attending a conference so didn’t get to spend as much time at the hotel as I would have liked, but overall it was a great stay and everything was spot on

Very minor but perhaps more sunloungers/beds for the pool area, but the pool area was still excellent and well serviced!

Amazing location, facilities, staff and breakfast was delicious every morning! Cannot recommend the hotel and facilities enough! Our room had everything one would need and staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating!

Even if the junior suite (for three people) was very nice, the room could have been more spacious — it felt a bit like a standard double room with added couch in front of the window. The pool area fills up quickly, there could have been a few more sun beds. Note that the pool is not really for swimming, it’s rather small and shallow (but with stunning views!).

Great hotel with an urban, relaxing atmosphere. Modern, clean, and the staff is extremely friendly. Breakfast was perfect, with a wonderful selection (except that there was only coffee from capsules). We loved the pool area on the rooftop terrace, in particular the fantastic views onto the cathedral and city overall.

The front desk staff were so nice! They treated my children so well. Breakfast was giant and filled with a variety of things. I'm sure everyone will find something there! Rooms were nice and mini bar was available.

The breakfast selection, while big, lacked a bit of a sweet selection. The sweet selection was very basic: croissants, a few other mini pastries, and pasteis de nata. I would suggest adding at least a few more pastries, as well as providing some chocolate paste to go with it. The room we were in had very bad soundproofing and there were nights were we literally barely slept due to outside noise (we were on the 2nd floor). The cleaning system was confusing, as you had to turn on a switch (which is easily forgetable) and thus it happened our room hadn't been made up and had to ask the reception to come clean our room.

The staff at the hotel was extremely friendly and were definitely quite the highlight of this hotel. The hotel also had a very nice restaurant attached to it where you could eat delicious meals. The room was always clean after the cleaning staff did their work. The rooftop pool was very nice with quite a few beds available, as well as a bar. Beware though that the pool is not heated as advertised, or at least wasn't when we were staying there! A night swim was thus not always possible.

We had a lovely stay at Barceló Old Town Funchal. The hotel is situated in an ideal location, right in the heart of Funchal’s charming old town. It was a great starting point for exploring the city, with restaurants, shops, and sights just around the corner. The breakfast was definitely a highlight – fresh, varied, and beautifully presented each morning. We especially appreciated being able to help ourselves from the fridge, and the sparkling wine was a nice touch that added a bit of luxury to the experience. The hotel itself is modern and very comfortable, with clean rooms and friendly, helpful staff. Everything felt well looked after, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. I would gladly stay here again!

Almost took a point off as there was no hairdryer or bathrobes in the room - however, that would have been churlish as they were provided within a few minutes of requesting them.

Very centrally located. Very comfortable, spacious, and quiet room. Excellent choice of food for breakfast - eggs cooked to order by a delightful young lady; in fact, all the staff were helpful and pleasant. Lovely swimming and lounging area on the roof will a lovely view over Funchal Huge and extremely comfortable bed and plenty of storage. Bottle of water provided free of charge every day if you wanted it The hotel was a real pleasure to come back to after a day's sightseeing. We stayed for 5 nights and would have been more than happy to have extended outstay. Sadly, we had to move on.
