Pheasant Lodge was all Tony. Tony is the owner, and he is a great character. He is warm, funny and a great storyteller. We brought wine and a dip with us, but he insisted on putting a full platter together for us and we didn't even use our dip. Tony offers a 2-course meal at night for a reasonable coar ( he needs notice of course) and when I told him over email that I don't eat steak, he drove all the way to Auckland to get me fish. He sat and ate dinner with us and entertained us with his life stories. He renovated the house and decorated it with antiques. If you want a place to stay within a few hours of Auckland, this is the place to stay, it is a great experience, and I would totally recommend it.

Breakfast was served and it was a joy watching Tony garnish the dish with fresh flowers and herbs from his garden, the flavours of each food item in the dish were crafted to perfection, cheers Tony, we will be back, Andre and Marelize.

A little bit noisy - although that really comes down to it being a heritage type building.

The Lodge is a beautiful trip back to a Victorian era style of vintage, and decorated with a range of memorabilia. It adds a lot of character.

Accommodation is short in Paparoa but this was definitely a very pleasant experience and the added bonus was the most beautifully presented breakfast was included in the price. Tony was a great host and this is a great alternative to motels or cabins.

We liked it all.

Everything! Tony has made his home a labour of love from the house itself to its antique eclectic furnishing and decor. Every object has a story and Tony is an enchanting and amusing raconteur. Very comfortable bed, full English breakfast was beautifully cooked and Tony couldn’t do enough for us or his other guests. We’d recommend Pheasant Lodge as a perfect stay between Auckland and the North when travelling up country.

Major embarassoment for me when he called me to ask why we hadnt arrived. If you are reading this, I suggest you communicate directly with the provider and not use booking. Com
