Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

New ZealandIt is a very minor gripe in saying the internet was at times a bit scratchy, but you're on Stewart Island, a good distance away from the mainland South Island in an isolated place with a small population, so it's not unreasonable to expect this to be the case. I didn't consider this to be a deal breaker
Everything was as advertised and worked exactly as it should. The location was excellent, only a short 5 minute walk down the road to the ferry terminal, local shop and to the pub in Oban. You are surrounded by trees and wake to the sound of birdsound. Expect also to see native birds flying. This is a superb place to stay.

New ZealandWe had a wonderful stay with Kaka Retreat. It was nice and peaceful and a short walking distance back to four square if you needed anything. The staff are wonderful and very helpful. The rooms are tidy and have everything you need. A comfortable bed, the shower pressure was fabulous. The heating of the rooms was perfect, We were so warm. The kitchen had everything you needed for a stay. In fact, We were able to cook ourselves dinner on the last night with the electric fry pan. You get your own porch you can sit out on and watch all the native birds flying around. 30 minutes Into arriving We saw Kaka birds, which was absolutely wonderful. Lastly, if you make communication with the team at Kaka Retreat about your arrival to the Island they will pick you and your luggage up from the ferry terminal as that is what we did it was so handy. I would definitely book back with Kaka Retreat again.

New ZealandTV needs updating. Only two channels and no ability to stream.
We were met at the ferry and shown around town before being taken to our accommodation. It was great having access to the room despite it being only 11am. The birdlife right outside our room was amazing- kaka, tui, bellbirds, kakariki.

United KingdomThe most comfortable thick duvet on the best. Such a good nights sleep. A short walk up the hill to reach the property from the ferry terminal. Everything we needed for our short stay was there. Our host let us know we only had a short amount of time if we wanted food at the hotel in the village, so glad of this or we would have missed it.

United KingdomThe room was spacious and comfortable, the grounds were very pretty and Stewart Island was a pleasure. Staff were friendly and picked us up and dropped us off to the airport depot which was much appreciated. Some notes - the fridge was turned off which we didn’t realise until a while after putting our food in. The property is very close to the ‘town centre’ but is up a hill. We did have an odd experience on check-out - the owner had agreed the day before to drop us off in town at 9:45am. We were running a couple of minutes late - she knocked loudly on the glass and seemed quite annoyed at us, so I said it was our bad and no worries, we could just walk to town ourselves and not hold her up. She then said she was dropping some other people down at 10am so we could join them and we said that would be great. But she then questioned us repeatedly about whether we would want the 10am drop-off such as “so what are we doing?” “What’s your decision” “So what is it?” Which we kept confirming so were quite confused and a bit taken-aback at the pointedness of it. Once confirmed she walked briskly away and I saw another woman ask how she was and she seemed to respond in an exasperated manner. It could well have been miscommunication or annoyance at something else so I haven’t given a bad rating as beside from this our interactions were friendly and we had a great stay. It did however unfortunately leave us feeling a bit uncomfortable and made an unpleasant end to an otherwise enjoyable stay (the driver was then someone else).
