Walls are paper thin, if you are a light sleeper bring earplugs

We book the double bedroom with shared bathroom. The room was very warm, the toilets clean Kitchen not too clean, but there was a family using it all day every day we were there. Cool pool table and lounge Easy check in

Close to the Whakapapa ski area and national park. The rooms and bathroom were quite clean. It offers great value for the money paid.

No locks on doors or keys provided for entering the lodge. Probably normal given how remote the park is but unexpected for me as a big city girl. Felt totally safe though.

Really homely feel. Perfect location for exploring the national park. Good kitchen facilities. The loft is cool.

We didn't like the smell in the room during dinner time of people cooking their own food. (not a big deal but noticeable).

Nice size clean room and bath room. Little date but perfectly fine. Location is walking distance from several restaurants and driving distance from entrance to the park. It does have a communal kitchen and room which is very nice.

Room nr 12 on the second floor having a common wall with the restroom - extremely noisy, you'll hear literally everything. Also the walls between the rooms are very thin, so if your neighbor decides to chat until late you won't be able to sleep. And road noise adds as well.

Convenient location. Comfortable area around kitchen. Parking.

The rooms weren't as clean as other hostels I've stayed in so far. Lots of bugs in the area (unavoidable), but then dead bugs on the floor and things which weren't always kept on top of. Only 1 working shower, but seemed to manage as it wasn't overly busy during my stay.

Good being in National Park, close to shuttles. Kitchen was fine, could easily cook there.

Garden space was a little small unfortunately and inside communal space was a little dark as trees covered all the widows. Be aware there are no transport options anywhere except the Tongariro Alpine crossing and very few amenities in the village (summer time).

Good size room. Well equipped kitchen. Friendly staff and able to leave luggage after check out.

The atmosphere of the whole place was quite odd. And this all came from the man who appeared to be the owner who lived on site and worked on reception (just to be super clear…this is the older American gentleman who has his vintage car out front and often wears hats) Here are a few things that happened to sum it up: -We arrived and no one was on reception. Just a load of keys. Apparently he had “gone for a drive”…right in the middle of the day just as everyone’s arriving to check in. -The kitchen near our room had 2 sides to it. People kept cooking/cleaning dishes on the right side while he was in there and he quickly told them this was the staff side of the kitchen and that they needed to use the other side. This of course would be fine, however there are no signs anywhere saying this on the staff side or fridge. All it needs is a few signs and it would save him a lot of hassle. -But then when I directly asked him if he was the owner he avoided the question then came up with something about it being “corporate owned” when it was very clear he was the owner. This leads me to believe he realises there are several bad reviews about him personally online so he actively avoids telling people he is the owner. -He was smoking outside which was blowing into windows and communal areas meaning people had to shut windows. -Him and his partner cooked a whole chicken in the oven then left it in the oven for 2 days. After just reading other reviews on here and Google it seems I am not the only one who found this guys behaviour a little strange which made us feel a little unwelcome at times.

Location was great, lodge had good lounge areas and laundry facilities. Very clean and spacious.
