Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Location fine. Communication excellent l. Staff friendly and helpful. Kitchen needs more cutlery, cups and some sink plugs ! Beds in double room were not that comfy and the room a bit small but for young travellers be fine. Very loud bathroom fan.

Noise from the outside, some alarm and very noisy bathroom fan - even when I switch off mine light & fan, I can hear others used in neighbouring rooms.
Great location, so close to a bus station, super convenient, one of the main reasons I decided to stay there. Kitchen well equipped and practical. Room very functional.

The single rooms at the front above the street were poorly insulated and very hot and noisy, with other guests sitting outside on the street to keep socialising after quiet time. We had a room at the back on the return trip, which was much better, although a bed with a bedhead or a wall would be great in the twin rooms. It's hard to sit up and read if you don't get the bed against the wall.
Nice little hostel with great facilities - huge kitchen, nice dining space and outdoor seating area. the location was fantastic, right over the road from the bus interchange. It was great that we could leave our extra luggage at no cost while walking the Abel Tasman Track. (A bit extra to leave bags if you're not returning.)

Room very close to outside recreational area no signs up outside getting folks know to keep quiet after say 10.

Can’t check in u til 3pm which they seem to be strict about . Need a code to get in 24/7 Not many areas to chill and be comfortable. And not clean .
Across from the bus station. E bus . Bunks were comfortable better if they had curtains.

Since my last stay the place has been run-down. Shared areas are grubby and need more regular cleaning, half the elements in the kitchen weren't working so kitchen gets crowded with people waiting to cook their meals. Noise from the street in the front rooms. OK for a night or two but no longer.
My second stay at this backpackers. Great location, very central and good value for Nelson, staff are friendly.

Room looked a bit tired. Needed a spruce up. Difficult shower to get into, a big step in. Not very safe.

Room very basic Cramped for 2 people. Bathroom light set off very noisy exhaust fan. Our outside door lock wasn't working properly

Very old and rundown.rooms, noisy exhaust fan that operated when the bathroom light was on. You needed a stepladder to get into the shower. It was a huge step up and over into the shower and getting out was a big drop down to the floor.

Not convinced my bed was clean! There were toenail clippings on the shelf and a pair of sunglasses next to the mattress which should have been noticed when changing the bottom sheet...
Great location with nice common areas/big kitchen, and bathrooms never had a queue - plus were always clean.
