Beautiful spot that needs some love

I've stayed here several times over the years but not since 2016. I was disappointed with the facilities, it felt as if no investment or updates had been made since I last visited nearly 9 years ago; the rooms were tired, the food was basic, there was dog poo everywhere and it generally felt very rundown. This time I stayed in the beach front cabins and was grateful I wasn't staying in the rooms or dorm (I have done previously, and have also camped before), as the cabins weren't amazing, but they still looked significantly better than the other accommodation on site. This place has so much potential as it's such a beautiful, tranquil location - really hope that with some investment, TLC, and looking after the animals a bit more, it can get back to what it was like many years ago.

Stunning location, remote and quiet spot to enjoy the beautiful Pacific coast. Friendly and responsive staff. Lots of different activities available.

It is a very remote location (need to take a boat across the river & horse ride/walk). This is very nice if you are looking for peacefull place but if you would like to visit las penitas etc, it is a long walk. Cleanliness could have been better, especially in the showers & toilets. There was also a lot of bats. The restaurant was a little bit slow, and you don’t have other options as it is the only restaurant close by.

Perfect place for relaxing, there was a number of things to do in the hostel (surf, yoga, horseback riding, slackline, long walk on an empty beach, turtle releases). The food in the restaurant was good.

After my roomates left, their beds were not stripped for over 24 hrs and the off/ on smell from the septic/ drains was bad.

The isolated location almost like a private beach. The activity equipment for use was good and the lounging areas, especially the thatched shade with sun beds. The food was excellent.

Not good for surfing. Everything is kind of slow (kitchen, check out ) so lot of waiting. But… you’re basicly chilling here anyways

Great location to be away from everything. Lot of space, lot of different kinds of spots to chill, lot of activities to do

We had a casa to ourselves but it was a little exposed without any curtains and the ceiling fans didn't work so was pretty hot at night. The biggest disappointment was that the place has nothing to do with turtles which is one of the main reasons we went there. It was a bit of a selling point for the place so I have to say that I felt a bit cheated. Also the place was overrun with what appeared to be two large tour groups - 40 or so youngsters on the first night we were there so it certainly was not peaceful

The location right next to a decent surf beach. Meals were very nice and the place is well run with good staff.

The smell in the room was not good...a lot of dirt from the animals (may be bat's...?) around the roofs... Sandflies and a lot of bites from them.... Itches a lot.

The beach nearby the hostel is really beautiful, calm and less crowded. Almost only the hostel guests are there! The sunset and outside area of the hostel is really worth it! The food you can order at the restaurant there is really delicious and they have vegetarian options!

When we booked the place, we didn't know that it was an island, it wasn't advertised anywhere so we were expecting to get there by car, and then surprise we had to take a boat and then a 10 minutes walk. Not a complain, more like a feedback, so you can add that information on the website.

I've traveled a lot, so I could instantly tell that the surfing Turtle Lodge is owned by an American, or a Canadain, or maybe even both No self respecting local person would allow their hostel to become so decrepit, dirty and over priced like this place. This hostel is designed straight of the ' western owner's handbook'. The cost of a bunk in a dorm isn't the worst price, however the dorm room is falling apart and very dirty, if the places gets cleaned it's not often and not very well. The toilets and showers are just below the stairs to the dorm room so you can smell when someone's on the toilet, and if you want you can actually just look down through the stairs and see in while the shower is being used. The food is awful and extremely over priced and consist mainly of fried chicken and burgers. This is the only place to eat so they take advantage of that, and even say if you have outside food you'll get charged for eating. Here we have another hostel that puts all your expenses on a tab so you don't know how much you're spending till you leave, and on top of that they add a voluntary 7% tip (without asking) so be careful. I suppose that 7% should go to the volunteers since theres more of them than actual guests. I'm not going to get started on the price of all the activities they offer, let's leave that at that. With the profits this place is making, you'd think it would be in better condition, but that money is probably going to the owners 3rd condo up north. The place is that bad we left a day early. We still got charged for the day but the 'volunteer' manager took 20% off. Whatever, it is what it is, Id rater pay the night and leave than stay any longer. Don't waste your time coming here it's not worth it, and the 'turtles' are just another marketing ploy.

Our double bed had a mosquito net, but the bunk bed not. So might be convenient to have a extra one in the room.

Welcome in paradise! We stayed in a Bungalow on the beach and it was perfect! They organise dance lessons/yoga/volleybal. It is a chill remote place so don’t think it is gonna be very fancy, but it is perfect te way it is. Easy going, good food, chill vibe.

The all lodge need a lot of maintenance to be restored. We stay one night in the beachfront bungalow, the location is really amazing, but everything is old and need to be replaced/fixed/cleaned. The second night we were in the double at the first floor, sea view; the view really amazing, but the room a disaster. Dirty and old, window impossible to close and no mosquitos net, curtains dirty, mat very very old, unconfortable and dirty impossible to sleep. Share bathroom with the dorm on the side, that was full; the toilets were very dirty already in the evening.....I let you imagine the morning after. And finally the animals: lot of dogs around living in the lodge and looking for food, very very slim. Thay were very friendly, but you can realize that nobody take care of them. They just try to catch what is falling down from your table when you eat. And I did not have a better impression about pigs and chickens. Is a shame because the place could be a piece of paradise

Staff very friendly, good restaurant, exceptional location in front of the sea

I don’t like the people who have left bad reviews, this place doesn’t deserve it. Know what you are booking and you will love it!

Simply paradise! It’s away from the villages, it’s dark so you can see the stars, you have the whole beach to yourself, and so many hammocks to relax in. And they pick you up with a horse and carriage, that is an experience in itself!!! Wonderful!! Ps, bring snacks of you need snacks. And donate to the homeless dogs.

The lodge offers amazing views of sunsets, a 15km long beach which is almost always completely empty, and amazing cabins directly on the beach with a view of the Pacific ocean. The menu is amazing, especially against the background of the unique location of the lodge; the chefs in the kitchen were very great. The ride to the lodge with a horse carriage is another very special experience.
