How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Verified reviewThe grounds are absolutely beautiful. Everything is really clean and well kept the whole vibe of the property is exceptional. The food was overall pretty good. The beloved restaurant was my favorite. The beach was exceptional!
Obviously, the seaweed problem is not good, but I understand that is not the hotel‘s fault. They did a great job doing the best they could to clean it up. What was really bad was the pool. The temperature of the water was like hot tub water And it did not look very clean. I ended up getting a UTI and had to take a taxi into town to get some antibiotics. And I’m pretty sure that it was from the pool.

Verified reviewThe staff was always friendly and tried to help whenever they could. Mexican show in the theater was very good. The best of the hotel are the employees who could be even better under another circumstances. Hotel room was nice.
The restaurant reservation was a huge disappointment for us. We could only eat in one” a la carte” because the rest were fully booked. Also they made us create accounts for doing it ourselves. What happened to the personal touch of speaking with an employee to make a reservation? Now it feels cold and complicated specially when traveling with a senior guest.

Verified reviewRooms were well appointed and general staff members were very kind and friendly. The buffet was great, nice options and very kind staff.
We had a number of issues with management; they seem inflexible and poorly empowered to make reasonable accommodations. The front desk did not have, or would not provide, change for American dollars. Their online app for making restaurant reservations was very clunky and inflexible, Finally, the beach was still covered with seaweed, and though they cleaned it up every morning, the smell was very strong. I cannot fault them for the volume of seaweed, but we did not really enjoy the beach because of it.

Disappointing Experience – I Couldn’t Wait to Leave I recently stayed at Catalonia Playa Maroma and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I had high hopes, but from the moment I arrived, it became clear this resort is in desperate need of updates and better management. Food: The food was by far the worst part of the trip. Cold, bland, and unimaginative. Even simple dishes were poorly executed. I visited the on-site pizzeria, which had a brick oven – sounds promising, right? Instead of reheating the pizzas that were just sitting out and cold, staff simply handed them to us as-is. The result: cold, tasteless pizza that felt like a chore to eat. Pool & Atmosphere: The pool was overcrowded and not enjoyable – it felt like people were just stewing in the water. The general vibe of the clientele skewed heavily towards middle-aged travelers and families from Europe. That’s fine if that’s your scene, but for anyone looking for a more dynamic or relaxing experience, this likely isn’t the right place. Wildlife & Safety Concerns: The resort was overrun by coatis. I watched one aggressively chase a woman and leap onto her to snatch a breakfast pastry from her hand. She screamed, and the staff stood by, doing nothing. It was honestly shocking and made me feel uneasy walking around with any food or drink. Rooms: Our room was spacious but old. The shower head leaked so badly we couldn’t use it without flooding the bathroom. Maintenance clearly isn’t a priority here. Forced Photo Experience: We were stopped by a staff member and asked to take a photo with performers in traditional Mexican attire. We politely declined, but the staff member insisted it would be just “one photo.” That turned into an awkward 15-minute photoshoot we couldn’t seem to escape. The performers even looked uncomfortable as we clearly wanted to leave. Overall: I felt trapped at this resort with very little to do and even less to eat.

Verified reviewWe went for a girls' trip and had a fabulous time! All the staff were so nice, the dining and entertainment options were great, and we loved the beach/ocean!
The only negative was the room fridge wasn't working when we got there and after we called and they came to service it, it barely got things cool. It wasn't a huge problem though. We put some drinks on ice in the sink and had all sorts of options throughout the resort!

Verified reviewIt’s my second time staying here and love it more than the first time. The hotel is beautiful with traditional mexican style buildings on the outside, but modern upgraded rooms inside with comfortable beds and a reading light on both sides of the bed, which for me it is a big plus. The main passage way from the pool to the lobby is do incredibly relaxing, beautiful with so much lush palms and soothing music. That walk, in itself, for me makes this resort an extra star in rating. The food was great. The sea bass at the Mamma Mia Italian Restaurant was spectacular, and the “formaggio” appetizer also superb. The freshly squeezed smoothies with no added sugar were absolutely delicious and I enjoyed them daily. The cappuccinos at the Maroma coffee house were delicious. I saw a wild parrot flying through the botanical grounds. The beach is shallow even after walking quite a ways in; so it’s perfect for kids to enjoy the water. The hobbie cat was included in the price and we enjoyed it daily. Overall I absolutely loved my stay.
My husband would have wished that the AC was cooler. It stayed at 23 and 24 degrees. For me it was perfect.

Verified reviewHard not to enjoy an all-included resort. Food is good, drinks a bit too sweet but staff is overall great. However, not the best.
There are many things to bear in mind: a) Swimming pool is not too big (and only one in the entire resort). Plenty of children (which I don't mind) but plenty of people waking up at 6am to put their towel to reserve the lounge places, despite being forbidden. They leave towels and go for breakfast and are barely there during the day. That definitively has to stop. b) If you don't stay for more than 5 nights, forget to have a table at any restaurant. Bookings need to be done in advance and we stayed for 3 nights. When we arrived, all was booked and no space available. This is ridiculous. Despite knowing this process, we did ask before arriving to make bookings at some restaurants to ensure to have a table, and reception told us not allowed till check in is done and not to worry as there will be place. Only place available: the buffet. I spent 1h30 in reception to get one booking at 6pm.... c) Restaurants are "fancy" from an appearance perspective, but food is not at its top. Spanish restaurant is a joke, with ridiculous portions and no mains available (even if they call them mains, it's actually tapas). Never happened to still feel hungry in an all included hotel....The food trucks are way to greasy/oily and doesn't seem that fresh. d) Staff is overall superb, nice and welcoming. However, if you have a problem with restaurant bookings, then things can change as no one wants to take responsibility for your issues and your left on your own. e) Finally, we did ask to be in the new rooms of the hotel. Reception did confirm to us on the phone we would be there. However, as we booked the cheapest room, we were of course in the old buildings, which I don't mind. However, the disappointment is being told one thing and then discover a different reality. f) Too expensive for what it is. I've been to many all included (all of them cheaper), and this one's been the worst so far, and it wasn't even peak season...
