How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI really enjoyed my stay at the White Monkey! The views are incredibly beautiful, there are many great activities and the family is so welcoming and helpful. Everybody eats dinner together and plays games afterwards. Check out Franky‘s Hut up the road for some chocolate samosas, too.

Verified reviewWaking up with such a view from the bed was incredible. The place is not much close to the town center, but the position it’s incredible and totally worth it. The cooking class was nice and funny and the all the atmosphere was the one of a big family, we really annoyed our time. They can arrange the transportation and everyone has been so kind. Thank you again!

Verified reviewThe place may not be luxurious, but it has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The people here are incredibly friendly, making you feel right at home. One of the highlights was sharing dinner with other guests—they even made noodles especially for our daughter. And of course, the breathtaking view made the whole stay unforgettable.

Verified reviewThe family are absolutely incredible. They are so generous with their time and knowledge! We ended up extending our stay because of how wonderful our experience was. We had a jam packed time with lots of activities to do: eagles rock, mini worlds end, liptons seat, rea factory, waterfall excursion and a hike in a bird sanctuary. Shirodh especially made these tours special with his expert knowledge and guidance. Thank you! A special mention as well to the delicious food and spectacular views! Would highly recommend.

Verified reviewLarge and helpful and welcoming family helping out with all aspects of our stay. They arranged Tuk-Tuks trips to Lipton's Seat from where you can walk through the plantations to the tea factory - very interesting. Easy walk from the accommodation to Eagle's Rock with fine views. Actually the views from the functional bungalows we stayed in were astounding. Wonderful food cooked served for dinner at a big table for all guests which meant we all talked to one another. They are building a restaurant. Lovely family member living next door does intricate Henna totoos and mum of the brothers gives great cooking classes. Both at reasonable rates. They have a Karon Board for playing in the evenings and an entertaining brother, good with kids even showed a film one evening. Family provided onward transport and can provide guided day trips and longer.

Verified reviewIt’s difficult to describe how exceptional this place is and the experience we had. We were invited, with other guests, into the lives of a beautiful large family. Dinners together, cups of tea and cooking classes with two amazing women. From driving us to various places, including a 5am visit to Lipton Seat, to a two hour drive so we could complete a trail hike. And the view, the location, is exquisite. To top it off, Franks’s Hut is at the top of the stairs for coffee, tea and a chocolate samosa!! The rooms are simple, incredibly affordable and look out to those views!! If in Haputale, this is your place to stay.
Room came without a second bed sheet but upon requesting one, got it straight away!!

Cleanliness was lacking. The sheets and towels look like they were bought in the 80s and were a bit threadbare

Verified reviewOur stay in Haputale was nothing short of magical. The location is absolutely unique, offering breathtaking views that we’ll remember for a long time — all at a truly exceptional value. But what made this experience truly special was the wonderful family who hosted us. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed and cared for. Their warm hospitality, delicious home-cooked Sri Lankan meals, and the personal attention they gave us made us feel like part of the family. We were also lucky to enjoy customized tours they arranged for us, including a scenic trip to Lipton’s Seat, and another to Ella and Diyaluma Falls — each filled with insight, local stories, and personal touches that only a local host could offer. Also these tours were offered at very reasonable price. Each member of the family contributed to making our stay memorable, giving us a deep appreciation of Sri Lankan culture and traditions. It was hard to leave — we truly wished we could have stayed longer. Haputale quickly became one of our favourite places in all of Sri Lanka. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a genuine, enriching, and peaceful stay in the hills.
The only minor downside was that the room felt a bit damp and humid. We understood this is part of staying in such a remote and lush highland area — which is also what makes the place so unique. It didn’t impact us much as we stayed just one night, but it’s something to be aware of, especially for longer stays.

Verified reviewIt is dirt cheap, the owners and the volunteers were very homely. The view is phenomenal and it is really worth the price.
Probably needed a fan to circulate air, a little out of the way from the city, but that is to be expected. Required to walk down a flight of stairs

The cottage we had down below had a great view but it was out dated and smelled like mold due to the old carpeted floors. Rooms above seemed much better.

Verified reviewWe stayed at White Monkey Dias Rest for two nights and had a lovely experience. The view from our room window was really nice—perfect to wake up to in the morning. The room was simple but well-equipped with a large bed, a table, and a towel rack, which was quite handy. The bathroom was impressively clean and comfortably spacious, with reliable hot water available—great after a day out exploring! What truly made the stay special was the warm and welcoming host family. They were incredibly kind and supportive throughout our visit. A special mention must go to Aunty—her home-cooked meals were absolutely delicious and comforting! We spent most of our days outside exploring Haputale and came back in the evenings just to relax and sleep, and this place was perfect for that. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful and homey stay in the hills!

Verified reviewWe enjoyed an authentic family experience with Dias, Farina and their children, as well as other travellers staying at the same time. Level of english spoken was high. We stayed one night and would recommend it as a base to walk in the tea fields. We got a tuk tuk up to Lipton’s Seat then walked the 6km down to the Dambatenee Tea Factory. The walk through the tea fields, interacting with the tea pickers, will remain one of our best Sri Lankan memories. Both dinner (LKR1500) and breakfast (LKR1200) prepared by Farina were extensive and delicious. She offers a cooking class too (LKR4000) but we were out hiking. You must stop in for some food and a chat with Franky at his hut at the road, before the stairs down to the accom. He is funny and cooks well. Roti with curry was perfect for a snack after our hike and his chocolate-filled samosas were delicious!
Haputale sits around 1500m elevation in a cloud forest. Atmospheric mist frequently swirls around. As a result the air is moist and the room experiences a lot of condensation. Everything feels damp, including the blankets provided on the bed. We slept in our clothes, as it is hard to keep those blankets clean. If you have a sleeping bag, use that. The family cannot afford to provide heaters without raising prices to cover the cost of electricity. But maybe this needs to be an optional extra charge? No wifi and the shower water can best be described as tepid. It took the mountain chill out of the water, that was about it.
