Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaWe stayed at Nilowin Guesthouse for 2 nights in August 2025 and were so impressed. The room was clean and comfortable and had a balcony with a terrific view over the valley. We ate our breakfasts and dinners at the Guesthouse and the food was excellent. We especially enjoyed doing the Sri Lankan cooking class on our first night — it was so good to learn more about Sri Lanka’s culinary traditions and to share a meal with our hosts. Most importantly, our hosts were full of useful information about how to spend our time in Haputale and the Southern Highlands and helped us arrange everything we needed (station pickups and drop offs, onward transport connections, a dawn trip to Horton Plains National Park, etc). Highly recommended.

Sri LankaWe were looking for a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of life in Colombo, and Nilowin, Haputale gave us just that. The location was fantastic, and the view from our room was truly spectacular — especially during sunrise and sunset. The room was spacious and clean. We had breakfast at Nilowin throughout our stay, and it was excellent every single day. One morning, we were treated to hoppers with fresh fruit, etc, which was delicious. The perfect way to start each day! Their food was always tasty and thoughtfully prepared. A heartfelt thank you to Saman and the team for making our time in Haputale so special. We enjoyed every minute of it.

AustraliaBeds were a little firm for my liking but my wife didn’t think so so maybe just me.
Lovely family run hotel managed by two brothers who are very friendly and helpful. Beautiful location with tea plantation on one side and amazing views on the other. It’s probably 7 or 8 minutes out of town by tuk tuk, but the staff arranged all the tuks for us at reasonable prices so getting around was easy.

AustraliaStaff were genuinely extremely friendly and helpful, went the extra mile to assist with some personal requests. Nice quiet location, however town is a little further away requiring a longer walk or tuk tuk. Had some great sunset views from the balcony and also from a walk being the hotel through the tea plantation. Monastery very close by to visit. Cooking course was well worth the money, great guidance from the brothers and delicious food.

AustraliaWe were without a car one day, which made us feel a little isolated, although I believe there is a good bus service passing the village.
We liked everything from the start, the welcoming drink, the clean room with kettle, and the amazing view from the balcony across the valley. The friendly and helpful staff, our host Saman, and Shan, always smiling. The guest house is situated in a small village, surrounded by tea plantation. We got to see the normal comings and goings of a Sri Lankan neighbourhood. Delicious and varied menu, I recommend the traditional curd and fruit for breakfast, very refreshing. For dinner the homemade Sri Lankan chicken curry comes with several tasty little side dishes. Saman also runs cooking classes in a purpose built kitchen, complete with wood stove and everything needed to make a Sri Lankan meal from scratch. We made the best curry , using ingredients such as coconut cream we made ourselves, and banana flowers. Thanks to our teacher Kumudu, and her husband Tharidu, for patiently taking us through each step. Afterwards we all sat down to eat together. A lovely, one of a kind experience. Highly recommend.

United Arab EmiratesWe highly recommend Nilowin Glenanore Guesthouse!!! We had such a lovely stay there! It was recommended from a friend and it surely didn’t disappoint! The family that runs it are super nice and helpful. Breakfast was amazing - the yummiest egg hopers we’ve had in Srilanka. The room was lovely with a great view. And what we enjoyed most - was their cooking class!! They’ve created a lovely, homely kitchen where the cooking class happens. Very informative and fun cooking class. We truly enjoyed it. Our three daughters got involved in everything we were preparing and everything was delicious!!! Thank you so much! Id be happy to come back tomorrow :)

GermanyA really nice little hotel close to Haputale town surrounded by tea plantations. The host and all employees are super friendly and try to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Communication was very easy and we received some really nice Tipps for activities in the area. The room was clean and comfortable with a kettle and hot water shower. The views were really nice from the room’s balcony overlooking the whole valley. The restaurant on the ground floor offers delicious food - we had a really good chicken Kotthu and Rice & curry there. Also the breakfast was tasty - especially the avocado egg sandwich! We were a bit unlucky with the weather during our stay and still had a great time due to the hospitality of our hosts! Highly recommend to stay here when you visit Haputale 😊
