I loved that this is a family run business. I was able to travel with the family tuk tuk to the destinations I need to travel to and was all organised for me. Their kindness shared is wonderful and they are close to all attractions and gorgeous restaurant down the road to have the best food I have eaten in Sri Lanka cooked before my very eyes. Such a special place to visit.

Expect mosquito bites. Take lots of repellant. That was the only thing.

A Heartfelt Stay That Turned into So Much More We originally booked just one night but ended up staying four — and I’m so glad we did. The hosts were nothing short of exceptional, welcoming us not just as guests, but as part of their family. What truly moved me was the kindness and compassion they showed my daughter during a difficult night. Their warmth, care, and the way the whole community came together to support her is something I will never forget. This place isn’t just accommodation — it’ felt like peace

We unexpectedly found ourselves in the heart of the Sri Lankan jungle at Hakuna Matata Hostel — and for just £5 a night with breakfast included. Yes, five! My teenage daughter couldn’t help but quip, “Mum, you make us look broke.” But this isn’t being broke — this is backpacking at its finest: affordable, raw, and bursting with adventure. Surrounded by towering trees, the sounds of birds, and monkeys rustling through jackfruit trees, this place is truly a hidden gem. I’ll admit, I only booked one night to test the waters, but with a perfect 10/10 rating from travellers across the globe (not just locals), I took a chance. I'm so glad I did. We had to reroute our entire trip due to heavy monsoon rains and limited accommodation options elsewhere. What began as a backup plan turned into the highlight of our journey. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and sincerity: “While you stay with us, you are part of our family.” And they meant it. No inflated tourist prices, no rehearsed smiles — just genuine people and heartfelt hospitality. The rooms are simple but clean and cosy with mosquito nets, and the atmosphere is something you can’t buy: peace, community, and a true slice of authentic Sri Lanka. We've stayed in far more expensive places on this trip, but none have matched the soul we found here. In a country where tourist traps can leave you feeling like a walking wallet, this place was refreshingly honest. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Would I come back? I extended another 3 nights. For £5 a night? It’s not about saving money — it’s about gaining perspective. This is the kind of rich that stays with you.

This place was just awesome! Clean bedroom and bathroom, peaceful and quiet surrounded by nature, cute dogs who are well-treated, yummy breakfast. Hammock was a big win. As a solo female traveller, Diwa made me feel safe and welcome, and helped me to plan my itinerary. He also took me on a tour which was very informative. Highly recommend.

I had an amazing stay at hakuna matata hostel. Diwa and nero were welcoming and super fun. They brought me everywhere and let me experience a lot of typical Sri Lankan culture, like the liquer, food, games, religion, culture etc. From the moment I arrived, I got immediately invited to join the trip to the secret waterfalls and many other activities in the following days. I won’t spoil yet, book your stay here if you want to discover more! I will definitely come back :) Ps. Also a great hostel if you wanna have nice travel pictures, because Diwa is a great photographer;)

Do not pick this location (middle of the jungle) if you are very sensitive to spiders at the ceiling’s corner…

The hosts and their project :-) The location, both in the middle of the jungle and at walking distance from the Lion’s rock. The hostel “front yard” is fantastic! The place is simple, with a good bed (with mosquitoes net) and the room has a fan with a remote control. Breakfast was super!

Best place ever!!! The location is just perfect, you are away from the loud and crowded places but still a walkable distance to anywhere, you are surrounded by nature you can also see deers in the morning it’s truly magical! Diwakara and his family are all the sweetest people that take you in and you feel so much at home. The beds are comfortable and the shower is nice and strong, which you don’t get everywhere. The only problem is that you might not want to leave this place EVER. 😆
