How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewVery friendly owner made us feel right at home. The rooms had comfy beds, were a good size and had decent fans and AC. If you go to Unawatuna Flamingo is a great option. Not fancy but very homely and welcoming and has everything you need. There's also a couple of nice communal sitting areas for rainy days or chilling out It is situated right in the middle of everything.
The rooms are a little dark and our room at the back with a nice jungle view had frosted glass, which was a shame. Unawatuna itself is not a place I would return to but if you're there, I'd highly recommend Flamingo

Verified reviewThe staff was amazing, such a nice people, available 24/7, supportive. You could feel like visiting your family (lovely family). Beautiful place for breakfast, the view was amazing. Having food preferences they were so open for our suggestions, eventually we had a unique breakfast, the best in Sri Lanka! :) I ordered "ocean view room" (which has a window/balcony to the street) without knowing how intense night life in Unawatuna is. The owner did so much effort to try to rearrange bookings to change into "jungle room" (opposite side with a garden view, much more quiet). Balcony was nice, view to the ocean above some buildings and trees, view to the busy street and bars downstars - it was very nice, colourful, chilling. You felt like perfect place for your vacations. Whatever question or wish we had, it was solved and answered immediately and with pleasure. Amazing how happy people the owner's family are! Location in the centre of everything. You leave the room and you have what you want (beach, water sport activities, street full of stores, travel agencies, tuk tuks, restaurants etc.)
If you're not fan of night life it might be to much noise to let you sleep while others are out. Also if you're not fun of russian hits ;) Just one plug in the room.

Verified review- room: rather spacious and every piece of equipment was intact. If there would be a luggage rack, it would be ideal - staff and host: very helpful and cheerful - location: beach is right across the street, our room was towards the back, which was really good as it is more quite
Only very small points: - noise insulation: noise insulation of the room is very limited, so we heard almost all the (bathroom) noises from our neighbours - mosquito net: the net for the double bed was actually two single bed nets. Therefore, it was too short at the ends of the bed and we still got biten

ACs and hot water was not working. It’s not a beach front
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to address a few points regarding your recent stay with us. After we requested payment on-site, you repeatedly claimed to have made a payment through /Booking.com, which, according to our policy, we only accept at the property. You also raised concerns about the air conditioning and hot water, both of which were functioning properly during your time here. I’d like to mention that while our air conditioning may not provide the extreme cooling found in freezing countries, it is effective and well-maintained. Additionally, we have solar panels that operate 24/7 to ensure a consistent supply of hot water. When you discovered that our hotel isn’t beachfront, you had the option to cancel your booking for free. I’d like to highlight that, although one of the air conditioners in your family room wasn’t working as expected, we promptly accommodated you by providing two double rooms, each with a fully functional air conditioner and bathroom, at no extra charge. We genuinely appreciate feedback from our guests, but I believe your claims do not accurately reflect the quality of service we provide. Thank you.

Bed very comfy with 2 pillows for each. The room was really clean too. Hope to go back one day. I gave them my laundry and they took care of it right away. Highly recommended

Front rooms are very noisy due to one or two beachside bars playing dance music into the early morning. The hosts did offer to move us into one of the back rooms which were better. We definitely recommend requesting a back room if you are at all sensitive to noise. Quite expensive - we have stayed in more luxurious hotels with better facilities on the south coast for a similar price. Also, should invest in warm white light bulbs.

They charged 3% extra just because I’m using credit card. They advertised free toiletries but there wasn’t basic shampoo in their bath room. The location is near restaurants and bars, which made the area really noisy at night. They don’t have blankets, had to use towels as blankets
Hi Ma‘am we appreciate your review regarding your stay at our hotel. But we would like to clarify a few misunderstandings for our future visitors who read this review. The 3% charge is not added by us but the credit card company default so unfortunately we can’t do anything about it. And we’re not doing card payments at our hotel, it’s done at a nearby shop. If you paid in cash that inconvenience wouldn’t have happened. (We always ask/offer our guests to pay in cash). We have provided you soap, toilet paper etc but for our price rates we’re unable to provide shampoo. Hope you kindly understand that. Ma‘am you didn’t make any complain about the blankets to us, but we would like to mention that there are 2 summer blankets on the bed in every room. We don’t provide winter blankets because this is a tropical country. But if you had requested for more blankets we would have definitely given you.
