How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewOnly the view was good, Ella Rock view. We were a honeymoon couple and informed them of this. Nothing was special to us. The room was dirty and there were no toiletries. In our first breakfast, there was a worm in the Sri Lankan pancake and they brought rotten fruits. Told them and complain about it. Nobody said sorry or it was a mistake. The owner son’s told us: the worm came from the garden during breakfast and birds ate fruits. I couldn’t believe the explanation 🥲 And they said, if we don’t like their hotel, we can leave. Thanks a lot for your help and valuable advice lol We had heavy luggages and did not carry them for two days. Another breakfast was better and they cleaned the room. But i had to tell them 3-4 times to do it.
It wasn’t clean, poor breakfast, poor communication and bad location.
Thank you for your negative review. You came here very angry. Because your driver left you on the road. Didn't you see that we decorated the bed in your room 😅. We have those pictures. We added very new and clean bed sheets, duvets, towels and pillowcases. After you complained, we took everything apart and added new ones. We unpacked everything in front of you. We cleaned the room again in front of you. But since you were not satisfied with anything, we said that you can go somewhere else without paying if you want. You misunderstood. We called you for breakfast, but you didn't come out. Usually when there is food, birds come to eat it. Our employee saw it clearly. He had chased them away several times. It was also recorded on our camera system. We think that the bird that came to eat brought a worm and ate the fruit. We never serve food with worms. This has never happened before. We are very confident that this was not an oversight on our part. But we apologized for it, and we still apologize for it. When you booked, we also provided you with directions. Did you check them? Again, I apologize for the oversight on our part. Thank you very much for your review.

Path to the property is difficult to reach, very pricey
Thank you for your negative review. We informed you about the route as soon as you booked. Other drivers arrived here, but your driver did not. That is your driver's problem. But we paid our money and arranged a tuk tuk to pick you up and drop you off. So this review is very unfair. You should have cancelled when we informed you about the route.

Verified reviewWe stayed as a family of 4 in the A Frame. It was a beautiful and clean 2 storey A framed cabin. The son and father who ran the home stay were so welcoming and provided all the information that was needed. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful however it is the view that made this place special!!!

The hosts don’t speak much English but were lovely. We didn’t know whether breakfast was included and this was tricky with the language barrier. Turns out it wasn’t but they made us some and charged us a little extra

Verified reviewHad a good stay at Ella Happy view. Facilities were great and room was very comfortable, loved having access to cups and a kettle. Nice view and location is right beside train tracks - did not find this disruptive, trains did not run overnight and we enjoyed watching the trains go past. Found the location a little tricky to find initially, there was much easier access from beside the train tracks. Just note if you are heading off early in the morning like we did to catch the train, there is no early breakfast option. The hosts were welcoming and provided us with a lovely breakfast and fresh towels when needed.

Verified reviewNice villa with good views and good location. The villa was fairly newly built so everything worked very well. Multiple usb-charging units was a big benefit. Short walk to the town via rail tracks. A very good breakfast.

Verified reviewOur stay at Ella Happy View was a lovely experience. The hosts were kind and gave us directions for nearby hikes, they even offered an umbrella when it was raining which we appreciated. The view of the mountain is genuinely breathtaking and the place is a 5 minute walk down the train tracks to the main road in Ella. The room we stayed in was nice and clean and had a good comfortable bed. The mountain view room we stayed in is right next to the railway track which was a charming quirk, we found the early morning trains were never really too loud to bother us as we woke up early anyway. One of our favorite stays so far in Sri Lanka!
