Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThis may be personal to us but some western options at breakfast would have been great as our stomachs were not quite ready for the fish in the morning
It was a very nice traditional Japanese ryokan experience including dinner and breakfast. The private hot spring on the balcony was really special

SlovakiaSo romantic I wish we could have stayed forever!!! The en-suite private onsen is on the balcony of the room and also the shower so super shy people might have a problem. Everything was perfect tho, it is a precious memory from our trip.

MalaysiaWhile the food variety was good, the quality could be better.
The location is good as it overlooks the lake. The room was big with a private onsen and a seating area with an excellent lake view. Excellent staff customer service. The check in reception person and the service person who brought us to the room spoke very good English. The private onsen has a “jacuzzi” function. So is the common onsen with a large indoor and a large outdoor onsen. Breakfast and dinner were ok.

PolandYou need to start the breakfast by the 8 am. The sleeping area with futons and tatami mats were a little bit crowded for 4 people.
The whole food experience, both breakfast and dinner, was wonderful. You will get to try many small portions of various dishes The executive room with a private Onsen and a lake view was just amazing. Great room service and a free shuttle bus from Ogotoonsen station

MalaysiaCheck out on time at 10 am. If extend more than 30 minute will need to pay extra charges. If stay one nite, cannot fully utilise the onsen with limited time. But if stay more than one nite the room rate and half board package is expensive. Rice, vege, soup, salted fish and etc were served during breakfast which is not our normal breakfast.

JapanMaybe you can request Japan Halal certification which souvenier is halal and have the certification sticker attached so its easier for Muslim tourist to buy.
The breakfast was very good, quite a variety. Tasty the Japanese way. The location is a bit far out but the train and their shuttle helped a lot. Place is nice and quiet to relax. As I am a Muslim I was happy to see that you have the Japan Halal certification so we feel confidant to come again and share news with family and friends. You also had souveniers but I had to scan one by one to see if it is halal.

AustriaThe breakfast was traditional Japanese style and very nice. One could tell the ingredients were very high quality. Perhaps not to everyone’s taste but for those who want the proper Japanese experience, this is perfect! Location is a bit tricky to get to if you’re on foot but they offer a very easy to use shuttle service to and from the local train station.

AustraliaThe bed was uncomfortable, however this was just a traditional Japanese mattress on the floor, whereas we are use to Western style beds and mattresses. And if you choose not to have Dinner on site, there are not many other options close by.
The food was amazing. Very different from other places we stayed in Japan.

SingaporeNothing!
It is located very close Kyoto Central area, upon reaching the train station, there was a phone available to dial for the pickup vehicle which came within 10mins, super convenient. Dinner and breakfast were super delicious and we enjoyed the peaceful and relaxing dining environment. The onsen was large and spacious, and had both and outdoor and an indoor pool.

AustraliaThe outdoor private hot spring in our room was the best experience, it was nice and cosy and even had a jacuzzi feature. It was such a vibe relaxing in an outdoor bath while snowing. The breakfast was amazing and delicious. It was a beautiful experience to enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine. The location was convenient and the bus ride from the station was very thankful as it was very cold.

SingaporeThe food was amazing & the rooms were spacious and comfortable. We booked a room with a private onsen overlooking the lake, the views and vibes were spectacular. The only thing i could possibly nitpick on is that some of the furniture looked a little old, but that doesn't bother me at all because the amenities worked fine & it was a lovely retreat away from the busy world. Would definitely return again.

United StatesMy room doesn't have a shower inside, it outside next to the open air bath tub. It will be nice to have an inside shower for little privacy when taking a shower. And taking shower outdoor is cold in winter time.
The location is quiet, have a nice view of the lake, at least for my room have the view. Food was great.

Hong KongThere is one thing that I don't like. While I was enjoying the bath in my private onsen, (it's an open onsen, no window, no cover), suddenly, water was falling down from the upper level, it splashed on my face. It worried me what kind of water was that, may be it is used and dirty water?!
The public onsen is very good, we like the food, very delicious, the room is spacious, we enjoyed the stay.

United StatesWhen we arrived at the train station the first night, it was not clear where the phone was to call the hotel/shuttle. It was mentioned in our confirmation email but our family could not find it - we ended up taking a taxi. We later asked the staff to show us and it turned out to be a cell phone hanging by a wire next to the station elevator.
We had private bath onsen room. It was nice to enjoy the spa water without having to go to the public bath at the onsen. The daily breakfast was excellent - the family enjoyed them very much. Staff was helpful and the shuttle to and from train station was greatly appreciated.

CanadaHotel doesn't feel like a true ryokan. It's big and some sections are almost abandoned. Dinner and breakfast were served inside individual booths, but not in the room. Be aware that breakfast times are either 7:30am or 8:00am. Check-out is 10am. We rushed to use one last time the outdoor private bath before checking-out (extending the check-out time of 1 hour is charged at over 4,000JPY!).
Outdoor private bath. The main reason why I'd like to come back! Very nice food selection for both dinner and breakfast. Would have been nice to have these served in our room and not having to walk hallways that aren't heated properly. Free shuttle from JR Otogo-onsen station. Too bad you have to call using your phone, but it was there within 5 mins. Relatively easy to travel from Kyoto using trains.
