Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeThe onsen had a slightly strong chlorine smell
The room was very clean and there were so many entertainment facilities but we couldnt experience them all. The private onsen rooms were also very clean and had a really nice ambience but we didnt have enough time to try the public one. They also provide free bike rental and we used it to ride around the area, was a really interesting and nice experience because the area around was so scenic!

New ZealandNothing it was all perfect
Everything was perfect ! Couldn't be a better intro to Japan, and the Onsen, both public and private, were absolutely divine. It was like being at a health spa. We loved padding around the hotel in the kimono they gave us. So relaxing ! The Japanese buffet breakfast was next level , there was literally everything you could possibly imagine and all made to the highest standards. Free drinks, ice creams and late ramen supper was the icing on the cake. A short walk to the town, we met some fantastic people there, and I believe we were fortunate to visit during week days when it was quieter than weekends.

New ZealandWe loved our stay! Was a nice break away from the craziness of Tokyo.. Location was perfect...we were able to borrow e bikes from the hotel, a great way to explore the area! We opted for the Breakfast and Dinner included and were happy with the variety of food available. Loved the private onsen, there are a few to choose from and we never had to wait for one to be free. Would highly recommend staying here.

United StatesThe hotel recently underwent major renovations. It is modern and clean, and still elegantly Japanese. Rooms are large and comfortable and there are little perks like free ice cream and ramen. The onsen baths are great, with a variety of private baths as well as the large indoor and outdoor baths. There is also a convenience store and a game center for kids. One thing to note, meals are not the traditional kaiseki meals served in your room. Instead meals are buffet style, with a good variety of dishes, Japanese and Western. This is a good hotel for families or couples of all ages.

United KingdomNothing - amazing. We will be back!
Great peaceful location with superb public and private onsen. Fantastic choice at buffet and lovely helpful staff with English. We did a great paper making course nearby and walked up to Mt Fuji viewpoint. Beautiful small onsen town. Easy cab or bus ride from railway station.

Everything was perfect, service, cleanliness, and so much fun and beautiful facilities! The private and public onsens were all stunning! The room was spacious with a large glass window that overlooked the green mountains across the estate. Our traditional japanese room came with two beds which were good for elderly members of the family, while the younger members slept well in futons. Absolutely relaxing stay. The buffets (dinner and breakfast) boast a huge variety of delicacies that were a feast for the eyes too! There were so many complimentary services like yukata rental, welcome drinks, ice pops, ramen, probiotic drinks, table tennis tables, and games room that my family enjoyed very much. 15 min downhill walk to Shuzenji river and other attractions in town.

It was perfect! We book japanese room in western style. It was spacious, with balcony and private bath tub. View was amazing, beds comfortable. Half-board breakfast&dinner - all perfect + free probiotic drink on the morning and ice cream on the evening! Staff was excellent! I would give 1000/10 to this hotel. Onsens and massage chairs - perfect as well.

ItalyThe only slight downside was the food. While both breakfast and dinner were abundant and offered a wide selection, the overall quality did not quite match the rest of the experience. It was enjoyable but not exceptional. Despite this minor drawback, the overall atmosphere and service at Shuzenji Onsen Katsuragawa were excellent. It’s a great choice for anyone looking for a relaxing and well-positioned onsen retreat, and we would happily return in the future!
Our stay at Shuzenji Onsen Katsuragawa was a fantastic experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ensuring that guests felt comfortable. One of the standout aspects of the hotel was the variety of complimentary services offered throughout the day, which made the stay even more enjoyable. A particularly nice touch was the late-night ramen, a thoughtful and delightful treat. The concept of having seven private onsens was truly impressive, allowing for a more intimate and relaxing experience. Additionally, the hotel’s location was excellent, making it easy to explore the beautiful surroundings.

United StatesIt’s very well organized and comfortable. The meal time is a bit of a jostle but there were plenty of choices of food. It’s a public spa but there were 2 outdoor options in addition to the indoor one on the women’s side which was a nice surprise. We walked the close in attractions such as the bamboo forest arrival day and then ventured out by car for a lovely hike the second day. It was very family friendly.

AustraliaIt was busy and felt overcrowded at dinner time.
Centrally located in Shuzenji and walking distance to and from bus stop. My room had a great view of Shuzenji and the mountains and loved staying there. I also loved that they have 7 private onsens you could use.Buffet dinner and breakfast were tasty and had a good selection of western and Japanese food. Highly recommended for families as they had good facilities for babies, small toddlers, kids and teenagers.

CanadaBoth buffet breakfast and dinner are soso. Lots of selection but many are dry but that's common problems for buffet I guess.
It is huge and full of different facilities. Both public and private onsen are clean and comfortable. Must try the Anma king 6 massage chair outside the public onsen. It is so good that I wish I can ship one back home. Instructions are very tourist friendly with pictures and multiple languages. Drinks and snacks are fair price. Good selections of welcome drinks and free ramen from 9:30 to 10:15 pm.

SingaporeNothing in particular
Reasonable rates for an excellent stay in Shuzenji Onsen. They provide welcome drinks and snacks and the dinner consists of a variety of wagyu beef, tempura and sashimi, among many other traditional Japanese fare. The Japanese-style rooms are generally large(er) with low beds making getting on and off easier. There are several outdoor onsens that you can reserve for private use, limited to 30 minutes. The hotel is a short walk to town to visit the Shrine and bamboo grove.

SingaporeNot much, this is probably the nicest hotel in Shuzenji.
I had a room with private onsen (really is a big wooden bucket/bath tub) situated at the balcony area. While comfortable, I think going to the public onsen is definitely more comfortable, so the private onsen is really only suitable for honeymooners or people who prefers total privacy. The room is big, with tatami bed and a sitting area which allows for small gathering after a meal.

MalaysiaNo slipper is provided upon check in and no shoe is allowed inside the hotel. During breakfast and dinner time , I have to wear socks provided by the hotel as I am not use to walking bare food inside a public area. There is spillage in the dining area by some hotel guests so my socks got wet, it is not a nice experience.
There are 7 private onsen available to choose from, free of charge .

United StatesI would have loved to have a hot drink station available, like coffee and/or tea. I didn't opt in for the meals, so I can't say about that, but complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby would have been really nice instead of buying cheap coffee at the convenience store in the lobby.
What a lovely classic Japanese onsen hotel. For the amenities and style, this was a great value compared to the other options in Shuzenji onsen. I booked 4 rooms for my group of 8 friends. We all loved it. We were the only foreigners there, and the typical guest was older Japanese folk or young families. The amenities are really so unique coming from the US. There is a karaoke lounge, arcade, conbini, game room, and more! There are a number of private onsen rooms, and we had no trouble finding an available one. (We stayed at the hotel on a Monday night, so it was a bit empty). Shuzenji Onsen itself is lovely and charming. The rooms had excellent vibes as well.

SingaporeNot quite dislike, but just fyi the meals are buffet style, in case you expect the regular half board.
Property seems newly renovated and the rooms were large. Lots of private onsen options, apart from the public onsens. Quaint town, some might find there’s nothing much to do but there is a temple and shrine to visit, which will surely look amazing during spring and fall.
