How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis place is spectacular and it’s the second time we booked. If you are looking for a traditional Japanese inn/hotel this is the place to stay!! I would recommend this to anyone, it is by far the best place we stayed in Japan! I would like to make a special mention to Koike Takahiro who looked after us! He was the most fantastic host and staff member, he did so much to help us and make our stay amazing, he was just incredible! Don’t hesitate to book this place you won’t be disappointed it’s is phenomenal!
It was all fantastic, there was nothing to not like!

Verified reviewGreat facilities. Excellent location. Modern and clean ryokan room that keeps the traditional spirit.
No restaurant or bar service on the day I stayed. This is usually an important part of a Ryokan experience, so cannot be understated. This wasn’t only conveyed after the booking was made.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. As we are a small ryokan, and in order to ensure the freshness of our ingredients, we keep only a limited stock of food. Therefore, we kindly ask our guests to contact us in advance if they wish to add meals to their reservation. (Even if we don’t hear from guests in advance, we still try our best to accommodate meal requests depending on the situation on the day.) We sincerely apologize that we were unable to provide meal service on the day of your stay. We appreciate your understanding and will continue to make improvements so that our guests can fully enjoy the ryokan experience we aim to offer. Thank you very much for your valuable feedback.

Verified reviewAmazing Ryokan experience! The house was spacious and beautiful. The outdoor onsen were beautiful with the nice garden background. There’s also another indoor onsen if you prefer indoor. Amazing traditional Japanese style breakfast. We had a wonderful time and will definitely come back to this place

Verified reviewWhen we arrived we were welcomed with matcha tea and a traditional desert which were refreshing after a very long journey. The room was outstanding, exactly like in the pictures, loved the traditional Japanese style. In the room we had everything we needed from toiletries to coffee maker. The room was clean, had AC in case we were cold, the bed was comfy and it had a view to the garden. The Ryokan was quiet, perfect for a few days of relaxation. We especially loved the yukatas. The view to the central garden was everything we had hoped for. The main star for us was the private onsen which was accessible directly from the shower. The kaiseki breakfast and dinner were amazing. The staff even adapted the menu to our dietary needs, for example we couldn't eat raw fish and they were happy to change some of the ingredients. The restaurant is cozy and elegant and all the tables have privacy. The staff was kind and helpful throughout our entire stay. The neighborhood was quiet, clean. There are several hikes you can take in the nearby woods. From some of them you can even see Mount Fuji. A true Ryokan experience.

Verified reviewThe onsen water and the private baths (indoor & outdoor) in the room were wonderful! The villa was spacious and clean. Staff were friendly and pleasant. Overall enjoyed the stay!
The ADDITIONAL dinner charge of ¥25,000 per person was absurd. I didn't check the price so when I saw the bill, I was surprised. The meal was good, but not superb. Next time, I will book without meals and explore local restaurants.

Verified reviewVery nice and cool place for quiet stay and Japanese garden and culture experience
I don’t like the way front desk works. They don’t allow any changes to plan. English is also a problem to understand each other properly.

Verified reviewBreakfast is super good and worthy 5000 yen, but remember to book everything in person NOT SUR BOOKING.COM. I feel like the person who responded me via gmail actually not works in Oni no Sumika, because the staff there apparently was aware of nothing mentioned in email.
Dinner is def not worthy 25000yen/person so I will not suggest booking it. The staff really tried his best to contact with me via translation, however, he misunderstood a lot of things which was kinda annoying. Moreover, my room wasn't cleaned the day before I left, the staff said bc of shortage of cleaning ppl, which made no sense to me.
Dear Guest Thank you very much for your valuable feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that our dinner did not meet your expectations, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused during your stay. We are particularly concerned about your mention of email communication via Gmail. As a rule, our official communication with guests is handled exclusively through the Booking.com system. We take this matter very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure there was no unauthorized contact. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your comments, which help us improve our service.

Verified reviewThe room is beautiful and full of characters, there is a lovely garden too where you hear the frogs, you really get to experience traditional aesthetic and atmosphere there. The room did feel quite big for a solo traveller. The staff are very attentive and helpful, Yamada san speaks excellent Chinese which makes the communication smooth, they also went out of their way to make arrangements for me to visit various places. The food was also very thoughtful and fresh.

Verified reviewVery beautiful and so many nice design details. The food was outstanding. Very professional service.
Mind the frogs in the garden that get it going pretty loud in June. But if you have ear plugs or ear buds you’re good.

Verified reviewThe room was amazing. The property is beautiful. The staff was very friendly, helpful, polite and welcoming. The atmosphere is serene and relaxing.
No breakfast or dinner available unfortunately. Also no flower class as advertised. It seems they had delivery issue / staff on holidays for those services. It was a thursday.
Dear guest, Thank you very much for your kind words regarding our room, the property, and our staff. We're truly honored by your appreciation. We sincerely apologize that breakfast, dinner, and the flower arrangement class were not available during your stay. These services usually require a reservation at least one day in advance, as we need time to prepare the necessary ingredients and flowers, and to coordinate staff schedules including chefs, servers, and the ikebana instructor. We appreciate your understanding and hope to welcome you again in the future with all services available. Warm regards, Oninosumika

Verified reviewThe property was clean, beautiful and the onsen was really relaxing. Everything was very well kept and breakfast was delicious. Staff, despite having limited English were great at still managing to communicate with us properly by other means, and were really friendly. One man even gave us a list of recommended restaurants around the area when dinner was not available for our particular booking :)
It is quite the uphill walk from the main attractions like the temple and bamboo forest but if you are keen on having a nice refreshing walk it should not be a problem as it was not for us.

Verified reviewI can't give enough compliments to the staff of this location. They were all super friendly and helpful to a group of Americans that spoke super broken Japanese. On both nights, the crew went above and beyond to call over the course of several hours in order to get us reservations in town. They really worked very hard to take care of us. I love the in-room onsens. They have a window that let's in air from the outside, and a shower attached so you don't get in dirty and you can get some nice relaxation time. I was skeptical at first because this was the most expensive leg of our trip, but it was worth every penny.
There is nothing I didn't like about this facility. Westerners will likely find it difficult to use a mattress on the ground like we did at first, and it takes a while to find the Air Conditioner. You may also not be able to adjust the heat in the Onsens. Some did, some didn't.
