Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

RomaniaThere was very little English translation of what to expect in relation to the onsen. Onsen itself was nice, but I could not compare it to another as it was my first such experience.
The food was excellent! And location was very convenient in relation to some of the attraction points we had for our trip.

IsraelDinner was set at 5:30pm with no option to change the time. Likewise, the menu was set which proved difficult for my wife and myself as we have dietary restrictions (vegetarian). While the staff accommodated our dietary restrictions for breakfast (which again was set for either 7:30 or 8:00am, no changes optional) I felt a bit more communication from the staff ahead of time would have prevented this unexpected, uncomfortable situation.
Loved the location off the beaten tourist trail and the private onsen was truly incredible. Likewise, the room felt very authentic and had a great natural view.

LuxembourgThere is not much in the direct surrounding and takes a while to get here by bus. But bus works well, and a daytrip to Lake Ashi is worth it.
Authentic feel of the place and the food, the onsen was also wonderful. Everything was clean, and the traditional beds on the floor were surprisingly comfortable.

Would highly recommend, we loved our short stay and would’ve stayed longer. The meals were exceptional.

FranceThe points we will be sharing here were not a problem for us, but it could be for other people. First, it's an old ryokan and you have the perks coming with this: it smells old (but we liked it), the bathrooms were a bit 90'sish and old wood can be noisy sometimes. Moreover, I will address the elephant in the room: the view from the window. Although you can really nicely see the mountains, when staying at the first floor, your window will direct you to a waste ground and an excavator. My hypothesis is that it's a training ground that was built recently while this ryokan was initially surrounded by vegetation. It's a bit of a pity and not the ryokan's fault at all, but I can see people being upset by this. We did not really care as we were mostly here for the onsen, the food and the room itself, but I wanted to warn whose in search for a so-called "perfect" experience. We still loved our stay at this hotel.
Really nice ryokan with an authentic atmosphere. The room was spacious and exactly what we dreamed of. We got really nice yukata to enjoy our stay and we could admire the really nice mountain view from our window. The onsen was really nice and the private hour we had was sufficient. It was a really relaxing time and as we stayed only for one night, our only wish would have been to enjoy longer the facility. The lady at the front desk was really nice and despite not speaking fluently in English, we could communicate easily. We were having dinner and breakfast at this ryokan and we were really happy about those. It was really flavorful and diversified and service was on point. In short, it was exactly what we wanted it to be!

United StatesJust the long bus ride to the hotel, but it was worth it.
The journey to the Onsen was a long bus ride but once we arrived the rooms were wonderful as was the spa. We had three rooms as we were five people. We were able to book 3 spots for the private spa. This was a treat as some of us have tattoos and had not used the spas at previous locations. There was a wonderful restaurant just up the road and a Lawsons too. It was a great way for us to experience an onsen. I would defiantly recommend staying here. Just wish we had more time to explore as we would have loved to gone to Lake Ashi.

AustraliaThe only thing I didn't like was transport, limited taxi drivers, buses are easy to navigate, luckily I didn't have much baggage. Walking to the bus stop was relatively easy.
It was a small Onsen that had 2 bath houses. I booked a private Onsen daily. Breakfast and dinner were traditional Japanese. A beautiful way to end my trip to Japan.

United StatesThe futon mattress was pretty thin. We could feel Tatami (Japanese floor covering) underneath and just couldn't get comfortable while sleeping. Signing up for the bath & meal time at check-in and the hostess writing them down on small pieces of paper felt a bit too convoluted, especially if you are staying for multiple days.
Their meals were exceptional - it's worth the stay even just for the meals. The quality of the onsen (hot spring) was just as great. One night, we used the bath at the end of the day (after everyone else had used), but the water and the facility were still very clean. They must be cleaning them between each use - very impressive. The staff was really friendly at the reception desk and in the dining hall. They set up the futon each day and refreshed the amenity daily (tea, snacks included). We were very happy we stayed here.

United StatesThere really isn't much to not like. Perhaps for my friend's husband, it was the sashimi but from what is stated above, he's a picky man and just isn't used to a variety of asian foods as my friend and I.
This charming ryokan was everything that I've wanted to experience since watching chibi maruko chan as a child growing up. From it's futons to charming employees, there is much to love here! My friend's review: Hakone Onsen Yuyado Yamanoshou is a very charming ryokan. It is within walking distance to a bus stop and several beautiful walking paths. Breakfast, dinner, and onsen time are scheduled at time of check in for the next two days. The onsen is private so perfect for people who are tattooed or shy around strangers. It is set outside with beautiful scenery and warmed rocks to lay against. The onsen provides the usual shampoo and conditioner but also several oils and essences to elevate your facial routine. My skin felt so smooth and healthy after just a few nights of this routine! I always ended my onsen time with a cup of water or milk. The milk there is really fresh! Meals are traditional kaiseki. Be prepared to try new things. The staff is very kind and welcoming. They will happily explain any part of the meal that seems confusing. Some of them do not speak english very well but it's nothing google translate can't fix. They will do everything possible to accommodate your requests. Through no fault of anyone, my husband had a bad stomach ache and they were constantly checking on him. They adjusted his meals so it was more palatable and easier on his tummy too. My husband is a very picky man and he felt that the food here was the best he's had in Japan. I had also requested extra pillows. They didnt have any at first but they remembered our request the next day and brought them in and even tucked in my little plushie! An important thing to note is that you are sleeping on futons. Once I had the second pillow, I slept like a rock but some people may have trouble sleeping on the floor. Hakone Onsen is not the fanciest hotel but the hearts of the people working there are as warm as the hot springs they maintain.

United KingdomAs we’re used to sleeping on a mattress, the futon on the floor was a bit uncomfortable but that’s all part of the experience
Staying here was a lovely relaxing break. The room was lovely, the food was excellent (including catering for a vegetarian), the onsen was great and the staff were so helpful. When we arrived we were booked into our dinner (5:30pm) and breakfast slots (07:30/08:45) for the 2 days. We were also booked into our 50 minute Onsen slot for each day. It seemed there was 2 private onsen rooms each with hour slots from 3-10pm - giving enough times for each of the rooms to have a daily slot. There are plentiful public transport options to explore the area and the nearest bus stops are only around a 5-10 minute walk. The Lalique museum is also close by (7-8 mins walk) and has a lovely cafe for lunch and the option to have tea in an orient express carriage - a good rainy day option.

SpainBreakfast included almost no eggs and I would have loved to be able to decide a bit on the breakfast possibilities, for example, we do not like tofu, but one of the main dishes was tofu. We would have loved to have more breakfast / dinner options, or at least the possibility to decide on the main dish.
Really liked the bedroom. One of the best experiences in Japan. The private Onsen is also a good offering. The hotel is truly a classic japanese experience and well located too. Loved the welcoming snacks and tee.

LuxembourgI wouldn't go there again with a child. The food, while being very authentic, can be too strange for a European child. Furthermore, the food was too much. I am afraid there is a lot of food waste involved...
The entire experience was very authentic. The food was delicious and the presentation fabulous. The service was very kind and spoke English. The entire place was spotless clean and everything was thought of.
