Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ItalyThe place was dirty. The room was dusty and there was sand on the beds. The bedsheets which were supposed to be clean were smelly. The shower room is mouldy.
Excellent position and amazing price for the area. Friendly staff.

GermanyEven though the place was mostly clean the showers was very dirty. Water not draining, shower mat constantly wet and disgusting and the worst was that the shower room reeked of cigarette smoke. Real shame, as the rest of the hostel was perfectly passable considering the price. But also some point deduction for no option to store your luggage even though its advertised.
Cheap and centrally located. Overall mostly clean.

PhilippinesHost is rude. I know this comment might not even matter, but the way he favors locals and white people over other Asian guests is just ridiculous. I was working remotely but can't find a decent place in the common room as it was always hoarded and packed by the local guests. They are noisy and made a lot of noises on my three nights there; endlessly watching TV and drinking with no sense of consideration towards other guests. Note that, if it was me making noise, then this host will lash out immediately on me. Mind you, I am not loud at all - it's just that I need to take calls in between my time. I was literally whispering when this new white guy checked in, came in, and answered a meeting as well - in his full voice. Yes, no reaction from the host haha! Also, a lot of time that his local guests and one white guest will make noise - but yes, no reaction from him. One time this guest pounded ice on metal so hard and loud that the host came up to check - but shrugged it off once he saw it his favorite local guest. The audacity he has. On my first night, I already noticed how it can get noisy on the common room hence I asked through gestures if I can work on the Izakaya below - where he stays and just watch Olympics. When I am on the middle of the call, he just interrupted me while repeatedly saying to shut up, and go out quickly! He did not even wait for me to make an excuse on the call so I can leave it professionally.... JUST PURE RUDENESS. First night and you've already ruined my experience, plus. his TV is way much louder compare to my voice! If you are reading this - go ahead and translate it so you'll know how rude and biased you are.
Location is very near Izukyu-Shimoda station. There's a nearby konbini and suparmarket for your basic needs.

United KingdomTOMI wasn’t the cleanest. It is a very DIY property and pretty cobbled together. I was uncertain if my bed sheets were even clean to be honest! I also wasn’t provided with a sheet, only a duvet and pillow and slept on a mattress topper - fine, but I don’t think this topper had been washed! The shower was pretty grim but it was hot and soap provided, and I personally wasn’t keen to use the “kitchen” (a microwave, kettle, and fridge), although other guests did. I suppose this really depends person to person, some people can tolerate a lot more dirt than others. But having said this, TOMI is charming and the place really grew on me, but I wouldn’t come here if you don’t have a bit of a sense of humour or are willing to just go with it for a couple of days.
Shimoda is a really cool town, I loved it, and I think if it hadn’t been for the location and the value of TOMI’s place, then I might not have stayed for the full three nights. I was able to rent a bike for two days very cheaply from TOMI, and the beds were very comfortable and the dorm was quiet. Loads and loads to do in the area!

JapanWhen we stayed there the other people were making noises in the night and the privacy is not good. One of the occupant was snoring so bad that we could not sleep till 1am. It has a weird smell across the house. The bathroom is the smallest I have seen in japan.
It's cheap and near the center.

JapanPlace was a bit messy and thrown together. Very old building and you had to bring your shoes upstairs with you in a plastic bag while managing your other belongings. Wouldnt be good for people with difficulty managing steep stairs or who have allergies to cigarette smoke or cats.
The place is located very close to the station. About a 6 minute walk, Even with suitcases. The place was about what I expected. It was just off the main street, Colorful painted sign, kind of reminded me of a beach shack. Very laid back, casual place, but has everything you need for hitting the beaches, Friendly guy recieved us. There were no storage lockers, but there was enough space to keep things. The main room with bunk beds had privacy curtains. It was easy to get enough of a good sleep because you could block out the light. The living room was smoker friendly. There was a cat on the premisis as well. Had a Japanese breakfast with fish, rice, natto, pickles and it was very reasonably priced! There were other snacks and drinks in the bar at night as well. Good atmosphere to meet other fellow travelers.

GermanyOne of the dirtiest and most run down hostels I’ve ever been in. It looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in months. Especially the shower area and fridge are extremely dirty and moldy. I felt dirty every time I touched something. There is a bad smell in the house, it’s especially bad in the shower (probably because of the mold). In general the house feels dark and depressing. I didn’t see any bugs though, which actually surprised me. A bed sheet was provided, but I’m pretty sure the pillow and blankets haven’t been washed. Also, there is no space to store your valuables. Apparently the area downstairs is supposed to be a Bar/ Izakaya, but it’s also really dirty and cluttered. I did not see any guests at the bar for the 2 nights I stayed there. As a woman travelling alone I did not really feel safe or comfortable. I wanted to leave the hostel early but everything else in the area was fully booked.
It’s close to the train station and there is a cute cat.

New ZealandVery gross hostel, beds were just okay but the shower... there are creatures growing there, I rather have a shower at the beach than at the hostel. I've been in many hostels were resources were not abundant, but in this one looks like the hostel owner just don't care about higiene at all. Plus I don't really think this is a safe place for women travelers at all.
