How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe stayed as a family of four (2 adults and 2 teens) in a Deluxe Studio and had a fantastic experience. The room was spotlessly clean and thoughtfully equipped, with the futon beds proving surprisingly popular with our teens. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Our visit coincided with the Gion Festival, and their pride and enthusiasm for the event really added to the atmosphere. The location is excellent – an easy walk to Kyoto Station, Nishiki Market, and many other attractions, while still feeling tucked away and peaceful. The air conditioning was an absolute lifesaver during the hot July weather, and the bathroom washing machine came in very handy. The team even gave us an extra dryer and kindly re-hung our clothes while we were out. We also really appreciated them arranging a taxi transfer to Osaka Itami Airport for us on our last day – it made everything seamless. All in all, this was great value for money and a warm, comfortable base for exploring Kyoto. Highly recommended for families or anyone wanting a welcoming, well-located stay!
Not much really. We didn't really use the little kitchen and some clothes hangers would have been useful.
Thank you very much for having your family stay with us at our hotel. We also thank you for your very kind review. We are happy that you had a pleasant and comfortable stay with us. At our hotel, you can enjoy the traditional beauty and traditional meals handed down by the ancient capital of Kyoto. We are happy to provide you with any items you may need during your stay by making a request. The city is also home to some very nice tourist attractions. Kyoto in the sunny summer, including the Kamogawa riverbed on the way to strolling, The green autumn leaves on the Kibune floor, Kurama, and along the riverside of Arashiyama are also very beautiful and refreshing. Kyoto offers beautiful scenery in each of the four seasons. Please come again in a different season. Thank you very much. From Tanakaya Kyoto Karasuma.

Verified reviewFantastic, helpful, and courteous staff. We received plenty of tips on where to eat—great local recommendations! The traditional breakfast was wonderful. The bathroom was spotless with thoughtful extras like bath salts. The team also helped arrange transport for our luggage, which made everything easier. Excellent location, close to everything. Highly recommend!
The only downside was the lack of kitchen utensils, which made it a bit difficult to use the kitchenette.
Thank you very much for staying at our hotel the other day. Kyoto is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage sites of Kyoto cuisine and Japanese food. Since the hotel is located in the center of the city, many guests enjoy sightseeing in the morning, return to the hotel for a rest, and go out for dinner in the evening, making their stay convenient. There are supermarkets, drugstores restaurants, and shopping nearby. There is a kitchenette in the room, but plates, cutlery, etc. can be rented upon request. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the lack of explanation. Kyoto is a place where you can enjoy all four seasons. We look forward to welcoming you again. Thank you for your warm review. Thank you very much for staying at our hotel the other day. Relax and stay.We are delighted to hear that you had a relaxing stay. After the washing machine, if weather permits, it is possible to dry the clothes on the roof. There is also a coin laundry 4 minutes away on foot. Verified reviewBeautiful Kyoto inn with an exceptional staff. We will definitely stay again if we return to Kyoto. The twin rooms have two beds (one twin, one slightly larger than twin) and a tatami area with room for two futons. This was a great setup for our family of four. The hotel provides tea and coffee beans with a grinder and dripper, and there’s a small kitchenette (microwave, induction burner, mini fridge, sink). The bathroom has a wonderful soaking tub. The staff and owners go out of their ways to help, offering suggestions and setting up reservations for dinner and activities, managing luggage sending, and more. They offer incredible in-room kaiseki meals (our family had both the vegan and fish versions) that were among the best meals we had on our trip, and have beer, wine, and sake available for sale. While we didn’t try them, there is also an in-room breakfast (also with a vegan option) and an afternoon tea and sweets service that you can order. The hotel is a short walk to many restaurants and a great bakery. It is a 7-10 minute walk from several subway lines and very close to several buses. There is an in-room washing machine, and a laundromat a couple of blocks away with large fast dryers. Overall, this was a great spot to base our Kyoto stay—highly recommended!
