How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewBeautiful bar area which we used often. Room well appointed and a good size. Japanese breakfast option a nice touch. No issues lending plugs, irons and ironing boards.
Would score hire if had room service. Whilst this is located close to the metro station there is still a short walk and ride to get to central Kyoto so we used taxis

Verified reviewLocation great. Breakfast excellent.
Not much suitable for party of three (i.e. a family of two parents and three children). An extra bed is not allowed in any of the rooms but the luxury suite. Staff polite but rigid. I was not offered any upgrade (though ordered 6 rooms), but rather an extra charge for a room with a little more space but still not big enough for extra bed, (calculated of-course according to the full-rate room difference). Essential rooms are de-facto tiny, quite an accomplishment with 26 SQM, due to poor layout of the toilets. when connecting rooms the open doors block mobility in room and the air condition panel… Cleanliness of rooms almost satisfactory, as we found used socks sticking up from under the bed. When I notified a "Senior Staff", he briefly apologized and said he will take care of this with housekeeping. However, I believe he did not, as the used socks were carefully delivered and put in our new room the next day… Rigid still, we were denied entry to the lounge. After a 4 day stay, we had our train scheduled two hours after checkout and wished to refresh there at 12:45 and were strictly denied. Policy is that guests who checked out cannot use hotel facilities throughout the day…

Verified reviewRoom was large and clean, with separate lounge and bedroom. Toiletries included were good. Breakfast was good. Location was good.
Bed was too big for the room with very little space around the bed. Mattress was too firm for me, bin was tiny.

Verified reviewBest hotel experience during our Japan trip. All was great, in a historic building (previously a school), fantastic location with bars and restaurants nearby, nice view from the room (the biggest during our Japan trip as well). So enjoyed the bar at the top floor offering outside sitting
Didn’t try the breakfast or restaurants which seemed quite expensive

Verified reviewProbably the best location Kyoto can offer. We searched quite a bit and realised Pontocho was the best place to stay. And Gate just stamped our findings and lived up to all the expectations. A great building with some history. I learnt this was a school converted into a hotel :) A lot of space in and around as part of the property development. Central most to all great places to eat drink and hangout after a tiring day. Right in the heart of Kyoto's shopping prominent shopping district. Lovely breakfasts to kick off your day :)
Not much to point out. Except for the fact that it you book late, you might be sucked out of the value for money oart. Some people may feel a bit out of place in a commercially active neighborhood. But that's a personal choice end of the day.

Verified reviewThis hotel truly excels in customer service. From check-in to check-out, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome immediately. The location is perfect for exploring, and our room was spotlessly clean. The real test of a hotel's service is how they handle problems, and they passed with flying colors. After I left, I realized I had forgotten some important items. I contacted the hotel, and they had already found them. They immediately arranged to post everything back to me without any hassle. Their efficiency and proactive approach saved me a lot of stress. Thank you so much to the entire team! I will definitely be staying here again.

Verified reviewThis hotel was absolutely stunning. We had a wonderful view of the mountains directly from our room and the view from the hotel lobby is just wonderful. The hotel provide pyjamas which were so comfy. We loved them that much we bought a pair each to take home. The room was wonderful with a coffee machine and very spacious. The hotel provide free drinks and snacks in the evening and have an open fire that you can toast your own marshmallows on. It was a lovely touch. The breakfast was delicious. We tried the Japanese breakfast and there meat and fish was so generous on that. It was such a good value for money. Lots of western options and fresh orange juice being squeezed each morning by a lovely lady with a smile. The gym was well equipped and was a nice way to start our day. This hotel far surpasses that of a hyatt. The little details from Huloc are expectational. I am super impressed and just wish they had locations around the world. What a wonderful experience Kyoto was also epic. A wonderful place.

Verified reviewWe loved the breakfast! By the time we were seated at the restaurant, the limited Japanese meal was sold out. We wished we could have tried it. Maybe you’ll be able to offer more in the future.
We were pleasantly surprised by the happy hour that was available, including roasting marshmallows. Perhaps you can also offer chocolate and graham crackers to build s’mores!!!
