Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

IndiaNothing really.
The location of the property is stunning. It’s right in the heart of the heritage area so everything is pretty much walking distance like the shrines, walk along the river. The hosts are incredibly helpful and accommodating.

The view from the windows was stunning, waking up to the river in the morning. Peaceful, relaxing, and exactly what I needed. Would 100% come back and recommend it to anyone looking for a calm and scenic escape.

Exceptional Family-Run Gem - Perfect Base for Nikko Temple Exploration My adult son and I discovered an absolute treasure during our temple and hiking adventure in Nikko. Shinkyo Inn exceeded every expectation, offering a unique blend of English and Japanese hospitality that made our stay unforgettable. Location & Accessibility: Perfectly positioned on Nikko's west side, we were literally steps from Shinkyo Bridge (2-minute walk) and Rinno-ji Temple (8 minutes). The strategic location made temple-hopping effortless, and we could easily access hiking trails without any transport hassles. Self check-in was seamless, and finding the property was straightforward. Accommodation Quality: Our room was genuinely spacious with beautiful warm wood appointments that created a cozy, authentic atmosphere. The bathroom deserves special mention - luxuriously large with excellent soaking facilities, perfect for rejuvenating after long hiking days. Everything was immaculately maintained. Standout Experience - The Restaurant/Bar: This is where Shinkyo Inn truly shines. Mark (English host) and Hisako (Japanese host) create magic together - I enjoyed exceptional fish & chips at unbeatable value, while my son savored perfectly prepared Japanese beef and rice. The complimentary breakfast was genuinely delicious. The evening bar atmosphere was wonderfully social, with friendly locals clearly proud of this establishment. Value & Service: Outstanding value proposition. The gracious hospitality from both hosts, combined with the quality accommodations and dining, far exceeded our modest investment. Perfect for: Temple enthusiasts, hikers, travelers wanting authentic local experience with international comfort, and anyone seeking genuine Japanese hospitality with English-speaking support.

United KingdomThe room and location were excellent with beautiful views and made it so easy to explore the temples complex as well as catch buses for further afield. Mark and Hisako were absolutely lovely hosts and had some excellent recommendations for us both food and activity wise! The included breakfast was delicious, and it was also great to have the ability to come back to the little restaurant in the evening. I could not recommend a place more than Shinkyo Inn.

United StatesMy minor points of improvement are the breakfast meat was a bit cold, and the facilities are a bit lacking, but this is because it is being run by only 2 people, which is understandable. Very minor critiques, this is a great place to stay in Nikko.
This inn only has two rooms, but they are huge, well furnished and equipped. The owners are super friendly and the value for money is very fair. The room had a nice view of the river, quiet and very close to the temples. Amazing bathroom and great room amenities.

JapanCheck out time is a little bit early by North American standards but understandable given that they have to get ready for the next guests (and likely very normal here in Japan). I should note also that they were very flexible in accommodating our early arrival time, so great service, one offset the other!
The Shinkyo Inn looks cute and well maintained upon arrival, you can just see it will be a warm, special place. Local guest coming into the cafe/bar seemed to enjoy meeting us as guests and were super friendly, really special blending of tourists and local people. The breakfast (and coffee ☕️) was fresh, tasty, and healthy, lovely dining room, with balcony for warmer weather overlooking the beautiful braided river. Our room was in pristine condition, clean, cozy, comfortable. Lovely, clean bathroom. Overall, a beautiful spot, a special place, great location!

Mark and his wife are the nicest, most helpful hosts! They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and answer all the questions we had. Their hospitality was amazing! The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom had such an amazing view of the river. I enjoyed a long hot bath while relaxing. Such a great location- you cross the street and you are at the many shrines Nikko has to offer. Easy to get to from the station too- either a nice walk through town or a 10 minute bus ride. The breakfast was amazing and so delicious! It is such a beautiful café downstairs overlooking the river and I could literally see the iconic Shinkyo bridge out the window (especially spectacular at night). We also chose to eat dinner with them and the food was amazing and the company was great. Mark is an English teacher and some of his students were there for dinner as well- it was amazing to talk to so many nice people and learn more about Japan.

Wonderful hospitality. Mark, an English teacher, was warm and helpful. He was engaging and offered us little tips what to do around the areas. The place is new and opens only on Fri, Sat and Sun for now. Mark and his wife run the place by themselves. Nicely located on a river bank, and you can see the flowing river from the dining room, patio and our room. Having breakfast with a flowing river view 10m away was really nice. The room was very clean and so was the decent size bathroom. Highly recommended.
