Location is within walking distance good to the Bus Terminal for public transportation to Kamikochi, Takayama or Matsumoto. 👍🏻

Lovely hotel in an onsen town — perfect for rest and relaxation. The hotel onsen is great, and you can also use the onsen at a nearby hotel by simply asking for a ticket at the front desk. The Japanese-style tatami room was very comfortable, and the location is ideal, just a 5-minute walk to the Kamikochi bus station.

The onsen doesn’t have a cold water pool or sauna.

Hotel goes to great efforts to make you feel subsumed into traditional Japanese life. Wonderful styling in parts of the building and lots of nice little extras, comfy beds and a very impressive onsen.

If you are unfamiliar with Japanese culture, I would not recommend staying here for just one night. There is a lot to get used to from clothing options, shoe policy, onsen rules and, above all, how to use equipment in the restaurant. Day 1 can be quite daunting. However, having done everything once, from day 2 it all starts to be much more fun. We had problems with the WiFi going down in our room, possibly because we were at the far end of the hotel annex. The gardens need attention and sadly are starting to be overrun with weeds.

Traditional style bedrooms, with the bonus of backs on chairs! Buffet style breakfast and dinner (optional extra) which had plenty to choose from. We had Traditional house wear too so felt very much like an experience rather than a stay in a hotel.

I don't think we noticed any information about tattoos in the onsen ahead of time or at the point of booking and were clearly advised of this on arrival. We knew it was part of the culture so were prepared, however sharing in case others are not.

We had a great family stay. It was a real Japanese experience! Wonderful Japanese hot baths, traditional Japanese clothes (including an outfit for our toddler), beautiful views from the hotel, heated tables in the room, playroom for kids, close to the bus station etc.

The playroom for kids opens in the afternoon, should be available all day. Also, our bedroom had no shower... It is possible that I missed something in the room description while making a reservation. However, showers were available in the spa area.

The beds and pillow all the comfort. The onsen. 2min walk from the bus station

The food could have more quality. But it’s a 3 star ryokan so I guess it’s ok. There a lot of food and options but it’s a buffet..

I enjoyed my stay at Hirayukan. The hotel location is great, the personnel are polite, and all the amenities have been provided. The ryokan is surprisingly large, the onsen is top-notch as well as the dinner and breakfast! I would definitely come here again.

    None! Everything met my expectations.

First of all, the staff was absolutely wonderful to me. The moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and was treated with an immense amount of respect. Had some great interactions with both the front desk agent and the excellent English speaking woman working the dinner check in. The onsen facilities were wonderful, especially the outdoor onsen. I thought dinner to be decent at best. The selection was great, but many of the “hot” dishes were lukewarm at best.

Oh boy, this is where my stay came apart. My room was -not- clean. There were numerous stains on the flooring, urine stains on the upper inside rim of the toilet, and an abundant amount of dust on many things in the room. The rooms are -not- sound proofed in the least bit. Especially the ceilings. I swear I had a herd of elephants above me who were also insomniacs to boot. I got some of the worst sleep of my month long trip due to the noise issues. This was of particular concern to me since I was embarking on a fifteen mile hike the next day. Not a great time on minimal sleep. As mentioned above, many of the hot dishes at dinner were lukewarm at best. While I appreciate the vast selection of food, it would be nice to switch to better warmers of chafing dishes. While this may not be on the staff entirely, there was a young man using his cell phone in the onsen changing room. There should be more adequate signage throughout the facilities about prohibiting phones in the onsen. Who knows what website my dong is going to end up on now. I would have lashed out, but as a foreigner in Japan, jail time is not appealing. When I pointed this out to the staff, they simply said “sorry” and no action was taken even though the guest was literally standing right next to us.

I like a few things at the hotel. - the room was very bright - the shop opened til very late, had a wide variety of items and offered 20% discount - the onsen was quite big - the location was good for visiting Kamikochi

We were not able to connect to the WIFI which was very weak. I didn't like taking off my shoes and left them in lockers at the lobby. The dinner and breakfast were good but were not that impressive and of high quality. The bathroom was a bit small. THe pillow was not too comfortable. The carpark allowed parking only upto 2pm the next day.
