Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ThailandThe onsen doesn’t have a cold water pool or sauna.
Lovely hotel in an onsen town — perfect for rest and relaxation. The hotel onsen is great, and you can also use the onsen at a nearby hotel by simply asking for a ticket at the front desk. The Japanese-style tatami room was very comfortable, and the location is ideal, just a 5-minute walk to the Kamikochi bus station.

United KingdomIf you are unfamiliar with Japanese culture, I would not recommend staying here for just one night. There is a lot to get used to from clothing options, shoe policy, onsen rules and, above all, how to use equipment in the restaurant. Day 1 can be quite daunting. However, having done everything once, from day 2 it all starts to be much more fun. We had problems with the WiFi going down in our room, possibly because we were at the far end of the hotel annex. The gardens need attention and sadly are starting to be overrun with weeds.
Hotel goes to great efforts to make you feel subsumed into traditional Japanese life. Wonderful styling in parts of the building and lots of nice little extras, comfy beds and a very impressive onsen.

United KingdomI don't think we noticed any information about tattoos in the onsen ahead of time or at the point of booking and were clearly advised of this on arrival. We knew it was part of the culture so were prepared, however sharing in case others are not.
Traditional style bedrooms, with the bonus of backs on chairs! Buffet style breakfast and dinner (optional extra) which had plenty to choose from. We had Traditional house wear too so felt very much like an experience rather than a stay in a hotel.

FranceThe playroom for kids opens in the afternoon, should be available all day. Also, our bedroom had no shower... It is possible that I missed something in the room description while making a reservation. However, showers were available in the spa area.
We had a great family stay. It was a real Japanese experience! Wonderful Japanese hot baths, traditional Japanese clothes (including an outfit for our toddler), beautiful views from the hotel, heated tables in the room, playroom for kids, close to the bus station etc.

I enjoyed my stay at Hirayukan. The hotel location is great, the personnel are polite, and all the amenities have been provided. The ryokan is surprisingly large, the onsen is top-notch as well as the dinner and breakfast! I would definitely come here again.

Hong KongWe were not able to connect to the WIFI which was very weak. I didn't like taking off my shoes and left them in lockers at the lobby. The dinner and breakfast were good but were not that impressive and of high quality. The bathroom was a bit small. THe pillow was not too comfortable. The carpark allowed parking only upto 2pm the next day.
I like a few things at the hotel. - the room was very bright - the shop opened til very late, had a wide variety of items and offered 20% discount - the onsen was quite big - the location was good for visiting Kamikochi

Malaysia258 euros is quite hefty for a one night stay here, which doesnt include the onsen fee and the meals. Shuttle services are also not provided. Ceilinga/ floors are not as soundproof, so you can expect a lot of heavy thumping if you have children staying in the unit above you.
Location was superb, the ryokan is located in the valley of a beautiful mountain range. The onsen was also comfortable, 2 inner onsen pools, 3 outer onsen pools. Cleanliness of the property is well maintained. Staff were very friendly.

SpainExtremely nice experience in this magnificent onsen hotel. The snowy outdoors onsen was just a dream today. Very very nice buffet for dinner so definitely can recommend getting that option. Room did not have a toilet though. Food is fresh and good. Plenty options without being huge. Super nice amenities on the onsen.

AustraliaHirayukan is the perfect place to stay to unwind and relax. The hotel has 2 indoor and 2 outdoor public bath areas which alternate morning and night for male and female. All guests however also have free access to the partner hotel's public bath around the corner. Hirayukan has an excellent in-house buffet restaurant but there are also several excellent restaurants nearby. The rooms are quite spacious and very comfortable. I can't wait to return.
