Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomWe loved our stay at Pension Syo. Absolutely amazing hosts, so kind in picking us up from the bus terminal, and checked us in quickly and explained everything we needed to know for our stay. We even got a copy of the shuttle bus timetable, which was very useful for planning our day on the mountain. We loved the food at the restaurant and ate there on two nights. Only improvement is the pillows were a bit flat, but we were able to get extra pillows so it was ok! Oh and I nearly forgot - the baths in the basement level were amazing after a day on the slopes - what a great facility!

BrazilHeating in rooms could be a bit better.
Epic trip to Hakuba stayed in Pension Syo which helped a lot to go snowboarding as the bus stop is exactly in front of the accomodation. Jun is very attentive and gave us a lift to station and back for free. There is a nice Onsen for free. There is good food and always jazz playing!!!!

AustraliaBeds are firm but ok.
Jun & family were very welcoming and helpful with lift back to train station. Amenities are great and it’s on a perfectly quiet street very close to Main Street of Echoland. 5min walk. There is a great Italian restaurant inside and a great Japanese restaurant 2 houses up. Will stay here again, no complaints.

AustraliaVery cosy and home like. We had the family room so had a private bathroom with shower and toilet which was a huge plus. Close to the Main Street where all the action is but very quiet. Owner is a very kind man and carried by bags and also picked us up from the train station which was incredible. Can’t recommend enough.

AustraliaJun and family were lovely and friendly. The hot private bath was great after a day of skiing. On departure Jun drove us to the station to catch our bus to Nagano. The location was perfect for catching shuttles to the snow and an easy stroll to the restaurants. The food at the Pension Syo restaurant was delicious.

AustraliaThe warmest hospitality you could wish for in Japan. Facilities were simple but clean, location amazing with a bus stop right out the front. The team even dropped us to our bus at the end of our stay. We can’t wait to return to Pension Syo!

Jun and his family were very accomodating and made us feel welcome. Great restaurant to have breakfast and dinner. Location was perfect, with free shuttle buses right out the front to a couple of snow resorts each morning with different times. Easy walk into main Echoland street which means the street is nice and quiet.

AustraliaThe room fitted our family of 5, with 3 beds in the mezzanine and two downstairs. The little bathroom in the room was convenient, but the bookable bathrooms with onsen were also great. Location right in Echoland is really convenient.

AustraliaThe family room we stayed in was not fully serviced daily so the carpet got a bit dusty. However can be done at our request. The towels had a bit of smell also.
The location was great for us being walking distance to eatery and gear hire. Jun the owner is super accommodating and helpful. He runs a fabulous restaurant which is a must try. The hotel facilities are clean and has available filtered cold and hot drinking water, a wahing machine & dryer. There's a small vending machine on-site for beverages. The family room beds were comfortable and I loved that the floors were heated.

NetherlandsVery friendly staff. Rooms were really comfortable and the location was perfect - close to restaurants and the shuttle stops - but also very quiet. The place is also very cozy in winter. The heated floor is amazing and the private bath is really good - totally unexpected! Loved it.

AustraliaGreat pension in a great location for family too, close to bus pickup for the ski fields without being affected by noise. Jun was very accommodating with quickly and easily switching our room due to an extremely noisy snorer next door - nothing was too much trouble for the staff to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Thankyou!

CanadaHard to find anything we didn’t like! I guess the bath towels were a bit small but they also left a basket of extra hand towels in the shower room for you to use freely. This is not the property’s fault, but make sure you bring boots with good grip. The roads are icy and there aren’t any sidewalks to get to/from Echoland. From personal experience, slipping on the road is not a fun experience!
Jun and his wife are extremely nice! We messaged Jun with our arrival itinerary and he picked us up from the train station. At checkout, he drove us early in the morning to the bus station so we could catch the first bus to Nagano. The hotel is centrally located within walking distance to Echoland (street with many restaurants and bars). It is also very easy to catch a mountain-specific free shuttle or the All Resort Hakuba Valley shuttle (the shuttle system is confusing at first but after a day or 2 you get the hang of it). We stayed in a triple room with 2 of us. There was one male and one female shared bathroom on the floor, never had any issues with it being occupied. The 2 private shower rooms with baths were such a treat after a long day of skiing! The heated floors weren’t working properly, so they provided us with a space heater for our room which worked fine. We also tried their Italian restaurant which was pretty good. Was it the best Italian food we’ve ever had? No, but it’s better than you’d expect in a small ski town in Japan! The waitress working there (I think her name was Miyuki?) was always happy and great to talk to! Highly recommend staying at Pension Syo!
