Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeA good value for your money. It is a simple ryokan with dinner and breakfast provided. It has both indoor and outdoor onsens. The food and onsens are decently good. No complaints 😊

SpainIt was a little annoying not having a toilet in the room, for those who need to go during the night. But a good reminder of how spoilt we are the rest of the time!
This hotel is great value. The staff were kind and helpful. The breakfast was excellent. There are washing machines to use (cold water only). I recommend visiting the outdoor bath (rotemburo) after dark, because you feel like you are in a magical spot in a wood. However, during the day you can see that is not quite the case... My little girls appreciated that they could go in the onsen with their dad (usually they are segregated), because the outdoor one is mixed and there was no one else there. This hotel feels a little like a cross between staying in a hotel and staying in someone's house (in a good way). The location is brilliant - the geyers of Mount Io are a few minutes' drive away. This was a fantastic experience for our daughter who is studying volcanoes at school. I recommend doing the walk around the Wakoto peninsula a short drive away (lake Kussharo). It is a beautiful walk through woods, and we saw a woodpecker, foxes, frogs, and other animals. The foot bath at Ikeno-yu is also a fun thing to do. Be sure to eat at Teshikaga Ramen. Absolutely amazing ramen!

AustraliaPillows can be a bit softer for westerners who are not used to rice mixed with cotton pillows.
The hotel is right behind the famous Mt Io where you can view the sulfur oozing out of the mountain. There's a nice nature trail (1km) that takes you there from the side of the hotel. The meals there were amazing, beyond good value for money. Every night was like a banquet. We enjoyed it very much. Just make sure you book your dinner earlier in the day so they can prepare for it. The host went out of her way to take us to the lake (we couldn't rent a bicycle) and asked us to call her when we wanted to be picked up. We ended up walking home (about 4 -5km walk). As we were approaching the hotel we could see she was looking out the windows worrying about us as it was getting dark. Beautiful people!

Location is near train station. Breakfast and dinner exceeding great. Onsen is great. At night can see sky full with stars. If lucky can even see the Milky Way. Great location to get to lake mashu and kussharo. Lots of deers and foxes sighting.

FranceThe onsen are a bit dark and some hair conditioner would be nice. The sound insulation is not very good, we could hear the corridor.
The location is perfect for visiting the lakes (if you don’t have a car, a bus goes straight from the Kawayu station). The dinner and breakfast were delicious and very cheap for the great quality. The room was spacious, clean and beautiful. It has its own toilets as well. Yukata are provided.

SingaporeCheck in by an elderly lady, not too friendly by Japan standard. Tatami floor in the room feels sticky and room is dusty. Hotel Wifi is gets cut off every 15-20 min while in use.
Room is spacious which makes it easy to open our luggages. Dinner and breakfast is decent for the price paid. They even have rooibos tea! 😊

SingaporeThe tatami-mat room comes with an ensuite toilet & wash-basin only with no hot water supply. Felt the futon could be thicker. No in-room kettle to boil water nor any crockery. There is a shared washroom facility on the same floor but again just cubicled-toilets and wash basins. No showering facility! To shower, my daughters and I had to head downstairs to the small onsen gender-segregated facility and shower in our birthday suit. Quite an awkward experience. Wasn't expecting that.
Good enough place for an overnight stay if you aren't too fussy. Comes with a simple Japanese breakfast so you don't need to drive all the way to town. A microwave oven, coin-laundry facility and drink vending machines are available on the ground floor.
