Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsThe futons were a little hard to sleep on, but with some getting used to they are fine. The dining hall location is quite unclear, our group did not know it was exclusively located in the other building until a couple days of our stay had already passed. The A/C in our room (412) is a little noisy when used for prolonged periods of time.
The indoor public bath was always clean, and extremely accessible throughout the day. The quality of the food in the cafe restaurant of the hotel was amazing and very affordable. The staff was always very friendly and polite. We were able to check into the hotel until quite late due to some delays in travel.

RussiaFront desk staff was very supportive to accomodate all our needs, even to the extent that lady guided us to nearby restaurant at the next street when we were not able to understand directions. Very delicious traditional breakfast. Even breakfast officealy starts at 7:00 AM, on the day of our departure they servedfull breakfast for us in separate room at 6:45 not to let us miss our bullet train to Tokyo.

United StatesMy only complaint is that I wish the food had been served hotter. The selection for the Western breakfast was limited, but I suppose that's to be expected
Although the hotel is older, everything was well-maintained, clean and fully functional. It had a charming, traditional atmosphere that felt authentically Japanese. I really appreciated the peaceful setting and how close it was to the cherry blossoms along the Kamo River. Some of the staff spoke English, and everyone was very friendly.

I liked the excellent service provided by the staff, the quietness of the hotel, the communal room where we can deliver our food and the car park (same price as the other ones around). Great location, we mainly walked to the sites but the access to public transport is easy and close by. The room is well equipped and we were happy to test a Japanese style room. The futons were a bit thin. The duvets are short so I had to add a second one which was available in the room to cover my feet. The laundry is in the second hotel across the road. The washing machine is efficient but not the dryers. We had to make it run for 2h at 100yen per 30 min.

CanadaSome of the staff were super helpful. I didn't like that there were signs that they wouldn't call a cab for you. Thought it was a bit expensive for the room compared to the other hotels we stayed at. The location was a bit far from all the places I was visiting.

United StatesWe came by bike and they did not have secure parking or storage for our bikes. They found an off site place to store our bikes, but it was not secure or safe. When we returned to get our bikes, someone had cut through our locks and moved our bikes to an open area. The locks were stolen.

United StatesIshicho is beautiful and well maintained. Our room was large, comfortable and had a balcony with mountain views 😍 It's a great location as well - short walk to many shops, restaurants and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. The staff is super friendly but some information was lost in translation but not too bad. Overall it was a great experience and we highly recommend Ishicho to anyone looking to stay at a traditional japanese ryoken.

AustraliaThe staff were really lovely and keen to help. The room was clean. Beds are laid out on the tatami mats in the evening. I used the Onsen, which I’m glad I experienced. The water is very hot. The location is fantastic, especially its proximity to the river. A great stay in Kyoto.

IndiaIt is a little bit of a walk from a metro station. The main one (city hall) is a 10 minute walk. Not too big a deal, unless you have bigger bags. Also it's a little away from central part of Kyoto (Gion etc), maybe a 30-35 min walk.
The room was cozy, and extremely clean. It had a nice outside garden. Definitely recommend the ryokan style room for the living space that turns in to a bedroom. Also they help you with setting up the bed, and the room cleaning service was impeccable. My fav thing about this hotel was the ONSEN! It was fantastic, and not too crowded. There were two for men in every wing, so lot of space.

AustraliaThe restaurant like so many ryokans refused to cater for gluten free. We understood this as the chefs are very well trained and have seasonal dishes. We had planned to eat takeaway but it was really disappointing to be so left out after seeing the beautiful dining hall and the other guests being served things. We could not even just get served a cut down menu even for full price. This meant we did not experience any meals, we did not wear the robes in the dining hall and we felt quite alienated from the other guests and the full experience, like we did not really fit in there. It meant we were sitting in our room eating Uber eats that came late and we had no means to heat anything up and it was really depressing. The guys came to make the beds up very early for us as it was noted at reception that we were not being served a meal but they forgot to consider that we still need to eat in our room. So we stepped over our beds and sat eating squashed in next to the wall. While I can see this is supposed to be a nice experience I would NOT recommend a ryokan that does not offer gluten free food to anyone who has Coealic Disease. You will not enjoy yourself as you expect even with the baths. This is not to say this ryokan is not a wonderful experience for those who can eat there as I am sure it is.
Everything was wonderful about the baths and rooms. It was nice to have a room divider too.
