How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewEasy parking. Easy walking to Hida village. Onsen was good. Great traditional Ryokan experience.
No electric kettle in room. Have to ask for hot water everytime when I want to make coffee.

Verified reviewVery clean place. Love the dinner and breakfast they prepared. Very friendly staff also.
A long walk to the bus stop. Very hard especially with kids and luggages. No shuttle service going to and fro the JR station.

Verified reviewThis is a great traditional Japanese hotel. The onsen is very nice with a cute (though small) outdoor area and a bunch of showers. Our room was on the second floor so we had a bathroom and sink on our floor, then bathed in the onsens downstairs. The dinner here is incredible!!! You get to wear your Japanese robe and they serve an amazing variety of delicious Japanese foods! Definitely plan a dinner here. This hotel is walking distance to the Hida Folk Village, which was perfect.
This hotel is not very close to other restaurants Not a bad thing, just an important FYI- If you want to eat breakfast or dinner at the hotel, you need to let them know well before the meal. They asked us about breakfast at check in, and we booked dinner the night before.

Verified reviewIt was basic and okay. We only booked it because it was the only place available during the Takayama festival. Onsen was pleasant with outside bath that fit one person.
The location is not ideal if you’re without a car, the last bus to the city is around 17:00. The staff was not very attentive when asked for help and didn’t really cared for us.

Verified reviewStaff were really nice, little English, but still clear and helpful. Food was great for both breakfast and dinner. Basically had the onsen to myself to experience and added to the stay.
It was close to Hida museum, but a bit of a trek into town each time, if you didn’t get the bus timings right.

Verified reviewWe stayed here for 1 night during the Takayama Spring Festival , it was one of the few hotels with a room available during this very busy time in Takayama. Turned out to be a great stay. A short walk to Hilda Folk Village. A traditional ryokan with onsen which we tried for the first time and enjoyed the experience. We caught the bus from the city centre to get there. They provided a free shuttle back into Takayama the next morning.

Verified reviewVery good dinner and breakfast, allthough it was a little hard for us to seat on the flour with low tables. We used the onsen as well.

Verified review- lovely traditional Japanese guesthouse - it was great to experience a traditional Japanese breakfast - the guesthouse is very close to the Hida Folk museum which is really worth a visit - we enjoyed the onsen (although note the public bath is the only bathroom option, no single showers). - the family was kind enough to drive us back to the station in the morning!
- we really enjoyed the accommodation but one needs to know it is a bit far from Takayama town centre (about 30 minutes walking) and there aren’t many restaurants around it. Maybe better to book the diner when one doesn’t want to walk back to town in the evening!

Verified reviewSince the arrival to the Ryokan, the staff was friendly and kind. The place was magic and beautiful, and make you feel part of the traditional japanese culture. The room was very big, bright and nice. The onsen was relaxing and helped us to release the tireness from our trip. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and impressed us with their beautiful presentation. We highly recomend this ryokan which will make you live a unique experience!

Verified reviewI loved the authentic feel of this place. It wasn’t downtown, therefore it wasn’t walking distance to everything. But for one night stay in town, it was perfect. We arrived into town at 5pm and took a taxi for 1000y to the property. They were waiting for us and dinner was ready. We enjoyed the onsen and went to bed. We woke up in the morning and started our day at the folk Hida Village, which is a 3mins walk. Then we took the bus into town and spent the entire day in town and then left on an evening train. After spending several nights in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto in busy places. The calm, serene feeling was a nice change of scenery.

Verified reviewClean and spacious
A bit out of the way - 30min walk from the station and not really accessible after hours unless you’re willing to walk
